Chapter 13 - The Doctor Who Changed Sides

Naomi's disappearance divided the team. Mara believed she had fled because the photograph exposed her. Claire insisted the message read like an attempt to draw Meridian away from the children. Adrian refused to decide without evidence.

June traced Naomi's emergency phone to an abandoned rehabilitation center near Quantico. The signal remained stationary, an obvious invitation.

Inside the center, they found Naomi locked in a therapy room with a gunshot wound in her side. She had used her own blood to write a number on the floor.

Thirty-one.

Reeve stabilized her while Mara secured the building. Naomi admitted she had worked at St. Orison as a young pediatric resident. Voss recruited doctors by claiming the children were classified witnesses rescued from traffickers. She believed him until she saw a girl returned to surgery after resisting placement.

That girl was Ana.

Naomi falsified Ana's death record and helped Nathan remove her through the white door. Meridian discovered the betrayal but spared Naomi because Voss wanted an observer close to future subjects. For years she quietly redirected investigations and protected children when she could.

"Why did you not tell us?" Mara asked.

"Because the Custodian has access to confessions before warrants are filed. Every witness who named him died."

"Who is he?"

Naomi pointed to the number on the floor. "File thirty-one. Claire knows where it is."

Claire had removed the leadership page from St. Orison, but not the supporting files. File Thirty-One was stored in a sealed evidence vault beneath the Pentagon, placed there during Rourke's first Northstar investigation.

Rourke denied knowing its contents. His access had been revoked after the recent breach, yet he remembered the vault code sequence.

Mara arranged a lawful retrieval under inspector general supervision. The vault contained a single reel of film and a handwritten report by Elena Mercer.

The film showed a Meridian council meeting from twelve years earlier. Faces appeared around a table, some blurred by poor light. The youngest member was clearly visible.

Major Daniel Hayes.

Adrian watched the image in disbelief.

Hayes had served beside him for eight years. He had rescued Owen from the maintenance cart, shot the officer in the lab, and protected the twins at the farmhouse.

The report identified him as Subject Thirty-One, a child removed from Kandar and placed in an American military family under a manufactured identity. Meridian later recruited him as an adult by threatening to expose his origins and destroy his adoptive parents.

Elena believed Hayes had become a double agent, but she could not determine which side he served at the end.

Adrian called the farmhouse.

Hayes answered.

"Where are the twins?"

"With me. Safe."

"Put Naomi's lead protection agent on."

Silence.

Then Hayes sighed.

"You found Thirty-One."

"Tell me this is not what it looks like."

"It is worse."

Hayes said Meridian had contacted him after the airport incident. They knew he was embedded near Adrian and ordered him to recover the compass box. Instead, he allowed himself to be taken so he could learn who was directing the operation. He had fed Meridian limited information while passing warnings to Nathan.

"Why did you never tell me?"

"Because you would have trusted me, sir. And they count on loyalty making intelligent men careless."

A child's voice sounded in the background. Lily asked whether Adrian was coming home.

Hayes lowered his voice. "The Custodian is moving now. He knows Claire is alive. He ordered me to bring the twins to Fort Belden by sunset. If I refuse, he activates dormant implants in twelve other children."

"We removed Lily and Owen's implants."

"They were never the real leverage."

The twelve children were living under protected identities across the country. Meridian had used Phase Seventeen to locate them and prepare their devices.

Hayes had a plan: appear to obey, bring decoy children, and force the Custodian to expose himself. Mara called it an unacceptable risk. Claire said it was the first opportunity to identify the leader and save the twelve.

Adrian looked at the people around him. Each had hidden truths in the name of protection. Every secret had created another door Meridian could use.

"No more private plans," he said. "We do this together, or we do not do it."

They built an operation around transparency. Every team received only necessary details, but all decisions were recorded and mirrored to independent oversight. June created false implant telemetry. Reeve prepared remote neutralizers. Ana and Nathan identified the likely conditioning commands.

At sunset, Hayes drove a van into Fort Belden, an abandoned communications base surrounded by forest. Two child-sized figures sat beneath blankets in the rear. They were training mannequins warmed to appear human on thermal cameras.

Adrian followed in a hidden compartment beneath the floor.

The gate opened without anyone touching it.

A voice came through the van radio.

"Welcome home, Thirty-One. Bring the twins to the command bunker. Colonel Steel may come too."

Hayes looked down at the concealed compartment.

"He knew," Adrian whispered.

"He always knows," Hayes replied.

The command bunker door opened.

General Malcolm Rourke stood inside alone.
