Police could not prove Ryan had delivered the rabbit.
There was no useful camera footage.
No fingerprint result that changed anything.
The box had become one more disturbing fact without a clean conclusion.
But it changed Sarah.
The next morning, she told Grace she would testify if necessary.
Ryan responded within twenty four hours.
He filed a motion requesting temporary possession of the marital residence.
His argument claimed Emily's pregnancy and emotional instability made maintenance of the property difficult.
Grace read the sentence aloud in her office.
Emily blinked.
"Emotional instability."
Grace looked disgusted.
"He attached messages."
"What messages?"
Screenshots.
Emily recognized the conversations.
Except parts were missing.
One showed her writing.
I can't do this anymore.
The screenshot ended there.
The full message had actually been sent to her sister during a difficult pregnancy day.
I can't do this anymore. I am going to stop trying to reorganize this nursery by myself and hire someone.
Another showed.
Sometimes I want to disappear.
The full sentence had been.
Sometimes I want to disappear into a hotel for two days and sleep until this baby comes.
Ryan had apparently accessed synced messages from an old tablet.
He presented fragments as evidence of instability.
Emily stared at the screenshots.
"He planned this."
Grace said nothing.
"He didn't just decide he wanted Madison."
Grace closed the folder.
"No."
"He was building a story."
"Yes."
"The emotional pregnant wife. Financially dependent. Unstable."
"Yes."
"So if I challenged the money, he could say I was irrational."
Grace nodded.
Emily felt something inside her become cold.
Ryan had always told her she was sensitive.
Too anxious.
Too emotional.
Too dependent.
She had spent years trying to correct traits he had benefited from exaggerating.
Now he had turned those private criticisms into legal strategy.
Emily looked at Grace.
"What happens to the motion?"
"We destroy it."

Grace filed the complete message threads.
She included dates.
Metadata.
Context.
She attached Emily's medical records showing no history supporting Ryan's claims.
She included evidence that Ryan had moved out voluntarily.
Judge Hale denied his request.
But Ryan's strategy told Grace something important.
"He believes the house matters."
Emily looked around the kitchen that evening.
"Because of the equity?"
"Maybe."
"Or because of the loan."
"Maybe."
Emily hated the word again.
Daniel Price called.
This time his voice carried something close to excitement.
"I found the trust connection."
Grace put him on speaker.
"What?"
"The one hundred thousand transfer into Cedar Ridge didn't stop there. Part of it funded legal fees for a proposed collateral assignment involving Emily's mother's trust."
Emily sat straighter.
"Who prepared it?"
"A lawyer in Carmel."
"Ryan's lawyer?"
"No. Different firm."
Grace asked for the name.
Daniel provided it.
Emily recognized it.
"That's the lawyer who handled my mother's estate."
Grace stared at her.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
They called immediately.
The attorney, Thomas Bell, sounded confused.
He remembered Ryan contacting his office.
Ryan claimed Emily wanted to explore using trust income as collateral for a business refinancing.
Thomas had refused to proceed without speaking directly to Emily.
Ryan then sent an email from Emily's account.
Once again.
The email stated she was too busy with pregnancy appointments and authorized Ryan to communicate for her.
Thomas still refused.
A week later, Ryan stopped calling.
Emily felt sick.
"He tried to get around me."
Grace nodded.
"And failed."
"But then he had Sarah's signature line on those papers."
"Which suggests he may have looked for another route."
Thomas searched his records.
Then he found something else.
A request for a certified copy of the trust instrument had been made four months earlier.
The request bore Emily's electronic signature.
She had never made it.
Grace became very quiet.
Ryan had not merely forged loan documents.
He had potentially impersonated Emily in communications with attorneys.
And he had done it while preparing to leave.
The larger pattern was now impossible to ignore.
He was trying to separate Emily from her financial security before she understood she needed it.
Grace requested an expedited evidentiary hearing.
Judge Hale scheduled it for the following week.
Ryan's attorney asked for delay.
Denied.
Madison sent Emily a message that night.

Emily stared at it.

Finally she wrote nothing.
Madison sent one last message.
When court is over, this house will be ours.
Emily looked around the room.
The house her mother had helped her buy.
The house Ryan had secretly borrowed against.
The house Madison already imagined owning.
