Chapter 12 - take your damn stuff)

The first thing that landed in front of Ryan was the watch Emily had given him on their fifth anniversary.

The second was the photograph from their honeymoon.

Then the cufflinks.

Keys.

Documents.

His wedding ring.

Madison picked it up.

Emily watched her slide it onto her finger.

"He chose me. Deal with it, sweetheart."

That sentence might have destroyed Emily three weeks earlier.

Now it merely confirmed how little Madison understood.

Ryan shoved the box.

Papers flew.

"You're pregnant, broke, and pathetic."

Judge Hale slammed the gavel.

"Mr. Carter."

The room went silent.

Emily bent slowly and retrieved the sealed envelope.

Ryan recognized it.

That reaction told Emily more than anything Grace had refused to say.

His face changed.

Not because he knew precisely what was inside.

Because he knew there were too many possibilities.

Too many lies.

Too many documents.

Emily held it up.

"You stupid bastard. You think this is just about cheating?"

Ryan's smile disappeared.

Madison turned.

"What the hell are you doing?"

Then the doors opened.

Lucy ran inside.

Sarah followed.

"Daddy."

Emily felt the courtroom disappear around that word.

Ryan looked as though someone had removed all the blood from his body.

Madison stared at him.

"Daddy?"

Lucy took another step.

Sarah grabbed her gently.

"Lucy, wait."

But it was too late.

Judge Hale had seen the child.

The courtroom had heard her.

Emily had heard her.

Ryan's attorney closed his eyes.

Grace stood slowly.

Sarah looked at Emily.

"I'm sorry. Traffic. I told her to wait outside with my sister, but she saw him."

Ryan finally spoke.

"Sarah."

Sarah flinched.

That told the judge something too.

Judge Hale looked toward Grace.

"Counsel."

Grace approached the bench.

"Your Honor, the sealed envelope contains certified documents related to undisclosed financial obligations and paternity records recently produced."

Ryan stood.

His attorney pulled him down.

Judge Hale extended her hand.

The envelope was delivered.

She opened it.

Read.

Removed her glasses.

Then she looked at Ryan.

"Mr. Carter, what the hell is this?"

Ryan moved forward.

A deputy blocked him.

"I need to see that."

His attorney hissed.

"Sit down."

Judge Hale's voice sharpened.

"You will not approach this bench."

Ryan stopped.

Madison looked at him.

"Who is she?"

He did not answer.

Lucy started crying.

Sarah immediately knelt.

Emily felt her own eyes fill.

She turned away.

The child did not deserve an audience for her confusion.

Judge Hale looked toward Sarah.

"Ma'am, are you Sarah Miller?"

Sarah stood.

"Yes, Your Honor."

"And the child?"

"My daughter."

Judge Hale looked at the documents.

"Her father?"

Sarah swallowed.

"Ryan Carter."

Madison stepped backward from Ryan.

The wedding ring was still on her finger.

She pulled it off.

"What?"

Ryan turned.

"Madison, not now."

"Not now?"

Judge Hale struck the gavel once.

"Ms. Blake, you will remain silent or leave my courtroom."

Madison's mouth closed.

Judge Hale looked at Ryan.

"You filed a sworn financial disclosure in this matter."

Ryan's attorney rose.

"Your Honor, we may need a brief recess."

"No."

Judge Hale held up the document.

"This acknowledgment of paternity is dated six years ago."

Ryan looked at his attorney.

The attorney looked furious.

Judge Hale continued.

"You did not disclose an existing child related financial obligation."

Ryan spoke.

"It was private support."

"That does not make it nonexistent."

The judge turned to Grace.

"What else?"

Grace approached.

"Bank records show approximately two hundred eighty six thousand dollars in payments connected to Ms. Miller and the child over six years. Some legitimate child expenses. Other transfers moved through Cedar Ridge Consulting."

Judge Hale looked at Ryan.

"Was Cedar Ridge disclosed?"

"No," Grace said.

Ryan's attorney stood.

"We contest the characterization."

Grace continued.

"We also have evidence linking Cedar Ridge funds to Lakeview Holdings, which Mr. Carter jointly controls with Ms. Blake."

Madison turned toward Ryan again.

"You told me Lakeview was funded by the company."

Ryan whispered.

"Shut up."

The courtroom heard him.

Judge Hale heard him.

So did Madison.

Her face hardened.

Grace continued.

"The sealed documents also include certified loan records connected to the marital residence."

Judge Hale returned to the envelope.

Then she found the signature analysis.

Her expression changed.

"Mr. Carter, your wife disputes signing these."

Ryan said nothing.

Judge Hale looked at Emily.

"Mrs. Carter, did you execute this home equity loan?"

"No, Your Honor."

"Did you authorize your husband to sign on your behalf?"

"No."

"Did you send this email granting approval?"

"No."

Grace handed the clerk the metadata report.

"The email originated from Mr. Carter's business office while Mrs. Carter was documented in Louisville."

Judge Hale looked at Ryan.

He finally lost control.

"This is ridiculous. Married people sign things for each other all the time."

Silence.

His attorney stared at him.

Ryan realized what he had said.

Too late.

Grace's voice became quiet.

"Did you sign Mrs. Carter's name?"

Ryan looked at her.

"I said people do it."

"Did you?"

"My wife knew the company needed money."

"Did she sign the document?"

Ryan slammed one palm on the table.

"She benefited from the money."

Judge Hale struck the gavel.

"Mr. Carter."

But Emily had heard enough.

So had everyone else.

Madison stared at Ryan as though a door had opened beneath her feet.

And Sarah stood behind Lucy with tears running silently down her face.

Grace asked one final question.

"Mr. Carter, did Emily Carter sign that loan?"

Ryan looked toward his wife.

Emily met his eyes.

He had called her naive.

Pregnant.

Broke.

Pathetic.

He had told her she needed him.

Now one truthful word could destroy him.

Ryan chose another lie.

"Yes."

May you like

Grace nodded.

"Then I think we should discuss the hospital security footage."
