- THE CHILD OF A DEAD MAN / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - the man behind the government car

The man entering the Vale mansion was not Adrian.

He was younger, perhaps forty-five, with close-cropped dark hair and the controlled posture of someone accustomed to giving orders. Two federal investigators followed him.

The little boy beside him wore a navy coat and carried a wooden train.

Mara saw him from the upper window.

Her knees nearly gave way.

“My son.”

Vivian caught her arm.

Celeste did not stop Mara when she ran from the room.

Vivian stayed beside Sophie until hospital paramedics arrived. Once the mother and newborn were safely transferred, Vivian followed the others downstairs.

Police officers filled the entrance hall, but the Vale security team had been ordered to stand down. Investigators collected phones, restricted exits, and photographed every room.

Mara reached the staircase.

The little boy looked up at her.

She stopped several feet away, terrified that moving too quickly would frighten him.

The man beside the child crouched.

“This is the woman I told you about,” he said gently.

The boy held the wooden train against his chest.

“My first mother?”

Mara covered her mouth.

The man nodded.

“She never stopped looking for you.”

Mara lowered herself to the floor.

The boy approached carefully.

When she opened her arms, he stepped into them.

Mara held him without speaking.

No one in the entrance hall looked away.

Vivian felt tears on her own face.

The man stood and turned toward Celeste.

“You violated our agreement.”

Celeste descended the stairs.

“I protected the child.”

“You hid him from his mother.”

“I hid him from Julian.”

“You also hid him from me for nine months.”

“Because I did not know whether you were loyal to Adrian or the office you serve.”

Vivian looked between them.

“Who are you?”

He removed an identification wallet.

“Special Agent Nathan Rowan.”

Vivian stared at the surname.

“My mother used Rowan.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

“Helena was my aunt.”

Vivian felt the floor shift beneath her.

“My mother never mentioned a brother or a nephew.”

“She could not.”

Nathan asked to speak privately, but Vivian refused.

“Mara deserves every answer. Sophie deserves answers. So does everyone Julian used.”

Nathan looked at the officers around them.

“Not every answer can be given in this house.”

“Start with the child.”

Nathan nodded.

“After Mara’s son was born, a nurse contacted a federal task force created to investigate the Vale financial network. We intercepted the private adoption.”

“Why didn’t you return him to Mara?”

“We attempted to locate her. Julian’s people had erased her identity and planted evidence suggesting she had left the country voluntarily.”

“I went to the police,” Mara said.

“The report never reached us.”

Nathan looked genuinely ashamed.

“A federal judge placed the child under temporary protection while we investigated his genetic connection to Adrian Vale.”

“Where has he been?” Mara asked.

“With a protected family connected to the task force. They cared for him, but they were never meant to replace you.”

Mara looked down at her son.

“What is his name?”

“The protected family called him Leo. His original birth record lists no name.”

Mara held the boy closer.

“Leo,” she whispered.

The child rested his head against her shoulder.

Vivian turned to Nathan.

“Did Leo open the real vault?”

Nathan hesitated.

“He activated a genetic scanner inside a government evidence facility.”

Celeste looked surprised.

“You moved the archive.”

“We moved what remained of it.”

“What does that mean?” Vivian asked.

“The real vault beneath the mausoleum had already been entered before Leo was born.”

“By whom?”

“We don’t know.”

Celeste’s hand tightened around the staircase railing.

“That is impossible.”

Nathan looked at her.

“The archive was empty except for a recording and a list of four embryo codes.”

Vivian remembered the key Celeste had given her.

“Room 19.”

Nathan glanced toward her hand.

“You have the mausoleum key.”

“Celeste gave it to me.”

“Then she has finally decided which side she is on.”

Celeste’s voice was cold.

“I am on the side that prevents Julian from destroying what Adrian built.”

“You spent twenty-eight years protecting Conrad’s version of events.”

“I spent twenty-eight years keeping Julian from learning that Adrian survived.”

Vivian stared at her.

“You knew Adrian was alive.”

“I knew he left the hospital alive. I did not know where Helena took him.”

“Did Conrad know?”

“He suspected.”

“Did Julian?”

“Not until he found Helena’s coded storage number.”

Nathan opened a file.

“Julian believed Adrian’s sample would allow him to activate the succession trust. But the embryo transfers were also designed to flush Adrian out of hiding.”

Vivian understood.

“If Adrian had a child, he might return.”

“Yes.”

The front doors opened.

Two officers escorted Julian inside.

His suit was wet from the rain, but his expression had recovered its calm.

He looked at Vivian, then at Mara holding Leo.

For one second, anger flashed across his face.

Nathan approached him.

“Julian Vale, you are being detained in connection with medical fraud, unlawful genetic-material transfer, evidence tampering, coercion, and conspiracy.”

Julian smiled faintly.

“You brought a dramatic list.”

“You can hear the complete charges at the federal building.”

Julian looked at Leo.

“The boy belongs to the Vale trust.”

Mara stood.

“He belongs to himself.”

“He carries our blood.”

“So does Vivian’s child,” Nathan said.

Julian’s eyes shifted toward Vivian’s stomach.

“You don’t know that.”

“We recovered the original embryology records.”

The confidence vanished from Julian’s face.

Nathan continued.

“Embryo A and Embryo B came from the same biological source. Neither came from you.”

Julian looked toward Celeste.

She did not defend him.

He was led toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped beside Vivian.

“You think this is over because they found a ledger and a frightened technician.”

“I think it is over between us.”

“You will need me when the child is born.”

“No.”

“The trust requires a Vale guardian.”

“The trust requires Adrian’s representative.”

Julian looked at her sharply.

Vivian knew she had revealed too much.

His expression slowly changed.

“You opened the vault.”

She said nothing.

Julian leaned closer while the officers held him.

“You opened the wrong one.”

Those were the same words Celeste had used.

Vivian’s fear returned.

May you like

Julian smiled.

“Ask Elias what happened in Room 7 after your mother left.”
