- THE CHILD OF A DEAD MAN / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - the first child was still alive

Vivian wanted to leave for the estate immediately.

Elias refused.

“You are months away from your delivery, under severe stress, and Julian controls the property.”

“There is a woman there in labor.”

“And entering without a plan could place both of you in greater danger.”

Mara set the black ledger on the table.

“We don’t need to enter through the front gate.”

Ruth understood.

“The greenhouse passage.”

Vivian shook her head.

“Julian knows about it now.”

“He knows you used it,” Mara said. “That doesn’t mean he knows where the second branch leads.”

There was another passage.

Helena’s maps, stored inside the vault, showed a split beneath the greenhouse. One route crossed beyond the estate wall. The other continued beneath the old guesthouse and opened near the mansion’s medical wing.

Conrad had built the underground corridor to move documents and people without using monitored roads.

The plan was simple but dangerous.

Elias would contact state investigators using evidence from the black ledger. Ruth would deliver copies to three news organizations. Hospital security would preserve the vault and its records.

Vivian and Mara would use the passage to reach Sophie.

Elias objected until Vivian looked directly at him.

“You helped my mother save Adrian. Help me save Sophie.”

He gave her a medical bag and a secure phone.

“If you feel pain, dizziness, or anything unusual, you leave immediately.”

Mara drove them to a maintenance road near the Vale property. The storm had weakened, but rain still moved through the trees.

They entered through the stone door and followed the passage beneath the estate.

At the split, Mara chose the western tunnel.

The air became warmer near the mansion.

They emerged inside a storage room containing medical supplies.

Voices came from the corridor.

A nurse hurried past, followed by Celeste Vale.

Julian’s mother wore a white suit and carried herself with the same composed authority she displayed at public events. At sixty-eight, Celeste controlled the Vale family’s social network, charitable boards, and political relationships.

She entered a private bedroom.

Vivian and Mara listened from the corridor.

Sophie cried out from inside.

A physician spoke urgently.

“The labor is progressing too quickly. We need to transfer her.”

“No hospital,” Celeste replied.

“The baby may require specialized care.”

“The child requires privacy.”

Vivian looked at Mara.

They entered together.

Sophie lay safely on a medical bed surrounded by private nurses. She appeared terrified.

Celeste turned.

For the first time Vivian had ever known her, Julian’s mother looked surprised.

“How did you enter this house?”

Vivian held up the secure phone.

“The police are already receiving the evidence.”

Celeste looked at Mara.

“You were paid to disappear.”

“You paid for silence,” Mara replied. “You did not receive it.”

The physician moved toward the door.

Celeste stopped him.

“You will remain with the patient.”

Vivian approached Sophie.

“My name is Vivian.”

“I know who you are,” Sophie whispered.

“Did Julian tell you the baby was his?”

Sophie began to cry.

“He said the clinic used an anonymous donor.”

“He lied.”

Celeste stepped between them.

“This conversation is dangerous for her.”

“The person who placed her here is dangerous.”

“You understand nothing about what Julian is trying to prevent.”

Vivian stared at her.

“He created children to control Adrian’s trust.”

Celeste’s face remained calm.

“Is that what Elias told you?”

“The evidence told me.”

“Evidence can be arranged.”

Mara held up her son’s hospital bracelet.

“Was this arranged?”

Celeste looked at the bracelet without emotion.

“Your child received a life you could never have provided.”

Mara moved toward her.

Vivian caught her arm.

“Where is he?” Mara demanded.

“Safe.”

“Give me his name.”

“No.”

Sirens became audible beyond the estate.

Celeste looked toward the window.

“You brought the police.”

“I brought witnesses,” Vivian said.

Celeste gave a small smile.

“You still think those are the same thing.”

The physician spoke from beside Sophie.

“We are out of time.”

The next minutes moved quickly.

The doctor and nurses focused on Sophie while Vivian remained near her head. Mara stood by the door to ensure no one removed the child.

Celeste made no attempt to interfere.

That frightened Vivian.

When the newborn finally cried, Sophie broke into relieved sobs.

The physician wrapped the baby safely and placed her in Sophie’s arms.

“A girl,” he said.

Sophie held her daughter tightly.

Mara watched from a short distance, tears running down her face.

Then Celeste spoke.

“The child does not carry the marker.”

The physician looked at her.

“What?”

Celeste stepped closer and examined the newborn’s eyes.

“No silver crescent. No broken-star mark.”

Vivian felt uneasy.

“Why does that matter?”

Celeste looked at Sophie.

“Because this is not one of Adrian’s descendants.”

Sophie stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

“The embryo failed. This child belongs to the donor listed in your original file.”

Vivian looked at Celeste.

“Then why keep Sophie here?”

“To protect her from Julian.”

Mara laughed bitterly.

“You expect us to believe you?”

“No. But you will soon understand that Julian’s plan stopped being about the trust months ago.”

Police vehicles entered the estate grounds.

Celeste removed a key from her pocket and placed it in Vivian’s hand.

It was stamped with the number 19.

“What does this open?”

“A room beneath the family mausoleum.”

Vivian looked at her.

“Why are you helping us?”

“I am helping the family.”

“You allowed Julian to manipulate four women.”

“I allowed Julian to believe he had control.”

Mara stepped forward.

“Where is my son?”

Celeste met her eyes.

“Your son is the first child who successfully opened Adrian’s vault.”

Everyone became silent.

“That isn’t possible,” Elias said through Vivian’s secure phone. He had been listening remotely. “The vault was still sealed.”

Celeste looked toward the device.

“You opened the decoy vault, Elias.”

Vivian stared at her.

Celeste continued.

“The real archive was opened twenty-two months ago by Mara’s child.”

“Where is he now?” Mara demanded.

Celeste turned toward the window.

“He was taken by the only person Julian fears.”

“Who?”

The estate gates opened below.

A black vehicle drove through the police barricade using an official government escort.

Celeste’s expression lost its confidence.

“He came sooner than I expected.”

The vehicle stopped beside the mansion.

A tall man stepped out.

He held the hand of a two-year-old boy.

The child looked up toward the bedroom window.

A silver crescent curved through his left iris.
