Chapter 11 - the signature that should not exist

Elias denied signing the authorization.

Nathan showed him the original form through a secure tablet.

The signature appeared genuine.

The date was twelve years earlier, long before Julian’s first embryo transfer.

Elias enlarged the document.

“That is my handwriting.”

Vivian stared at him.

“You just said you did not sign it.”

“I didn’t.”

“How can both be true?”

Elias pointed to the bottom of the form.

“This authorization came from a packet I completed during St. Catherine’s archive relocation. My signature was transferred onto a different page.”

Nathan remained skeptical.

“The institute director says you personally approved the release.”

“She is lying.”

“She provided a security photograph.”

The image showed Elias entering the Vale Reproductive Institute at night.

The timestamp was from twelve years earlier.

Elias looked at it for a long time.

“I went there.”

Vivian felt betrayed again.

“Why?”

“Celeste contacted me. She said Helena had been injured and needed help.”

“My mother was alive then.”

“Yes.”

“Was she at the clinic?”

“No. When I arrived, Celeste admitted she had lied.”

“What did she want?”

“The ring.”

Elias touched the chain beneath his shirt.

“She knew you had it?”

“She suspected.”

“What happened?”

“She offered to exchange information about Adrian for the ring. I refused. Security removed me.”

Nathan swiped to the next image.

It showed Elias restrained by two guards inside the clinic corridor.

The third image showed the clinic director opening his medical bag.

“They took a signed document from your bag,” Nathan said.

Elias nodded slowly.

“I had hospital transfer forms inside.”

“They used one to create the release authorization.”

Vivian wanted to believe him, but Helena’s warning echoed in her mind.

Do not make the mistake of trusting any of us completely.

Nathan collected a voluntary handwriting sample and sent it to the forensic laboratory.

While they waited, the hospital board called an emergency meeting.

The black ledger had already caused panic across the Vale corporate network. Banks froze accounts connected to Conrad’s offshore companies. Three board members resigned. Several officials publicly denied receiving payments before investigators had even named them.

Celeste issued a statement claiming Julian had acted without the family’s knowledge.

Vivian watched it on television.

“She is trying to separate herself from him.”

Nathan nodded.

“She may also be buying time.”

“For what?”

“To find Adrian before we do.”

Elias looked at Helena’s tapes.

“Celeste believes Adrian is alive.”

“So does Julian,” Vivian said.

“He created four heirs to force Adrian to respond.”

Nathan closed the curtains.

“Then perhaps Adrian already has.”

He placed a printed email on Vivian’s table.

It had arrived at the Vale Foundation that morning from an encrypted address.

The message contained only one sentence.

The guardian will be named when the second child is born.

Vivian read it twice.

“Second child.”

“Leo was the first successful embryo,” Nathan said.

“And my baby is the second.”

“Possibly.”

The message included an attached audio file.

Nathan played it.

A man’s voice spoke through heavy distortion.

“Julian Vale possesses no legal or biological claim over the children created from Archive 19. Any attempt to remove them from their mothers will activate the Blackwater disclosure.”

Vivian looked at Nathan.

“What is the Blackwater disclosure?”

“We don’t know.”

The recording continued.

“Vivian Mercer Vale will retain full custody of her child. Mara Ellison will retain full custody of hers. The succession trust will remain dormant until Thomas Rowan’s identity is restored.”

Nathan’s face changed when he heard his father’s name.

The voice finished.

“Elias Hart knows how to begin.”

The audio ended.

Everyone looked at Elias.

He appeared confused.

“I don’t know.”

Nathan placed Adrian’s ring on the table.

“You said the ring opened the decoy vault.”

“It did.”

“Maybe it contains something else.”

The ring had a narrow seam around its edge. Elias had never attempted to open it because he believed it was solid.

Nathan used a small instrument to release the seam.

The ring separated into two pieces.

Inside was a tightly rolled strip of paper.

Elias unfolded it.

A sequence of numbers had been written in faded ink.

They matched coordinates near Blackwater Road, where Adrian’s car had supposedly crashed.

At the bottom was a date.

The following day.

And a time.

11:40 p.m.

Vivian stared at it.

“Those coordinates have been hidden for twenty-eight years, but the meeting date is tomorrow.”

Nathan examined the ink.

“The final line is new.”

“Someone opened the ring,” Elias said.

“Or replaced the paper.”

Vivian looked toward the door.

Only a handful of people had handled the ring since Elias entered the vault.

Elias.

Ruth.

Nathan.

Hospital security.

And Vivian herself.

Ruth arrived fifteen minutes later.

When she saw the coordinates, the color left her face.

“I know that location.”

“What is there?” Vivian asked.

“An abandoned chapel above the cliffs.”

Nathan prepared a team to search it immediately.

Ruth stopped him.

“If Adrian arranged a time, he will be watching. Armed officers may cause him to disappear.”

“My father’s identity is part of this.”

“And Adrian has survived twenty-eight years because he trusted almost no one.”

Vivian made the decision.

“We go with a small group.”

Nathan objected.

“You are pregnant and currently under hospital observation.”

“I won’t enter the chapel. I will stay in the vehicle.”

Elias shook his head.

“You are the reason Adrian may appear.”

“Then he will not appear unless I’m there.”

That evening, the forensic laboratory returned its preliminary analysis.

The authorization releasing Adrian’s genetic sample had not been signed by Elias.

His signature had been copied.

But the laboratory discovered another fingerprint beneath the seal.

It belonged to a person entered into federal records only once.

May you like

Adrian Vale.

The supposedly dead man had authorized the release of his own sample.
