Chapter 9 - The Doctor's File

By sunrise, Nathan Bloom was no longer simply a doctor connected to a questionable guardianship petition.
He was part of a criminal investigation.
Vanessa described how Colin found him.
Bloom had once invested in a failed medical office development financed by Carter Development.
He owed Colin money.
In exchange for debt relief, he agreed to evaluate Margaret.
The first examination happened while Daniel was abroad.
Margaret remembered it.
A polite doctor.
A short memory test.
Several questions.
Nothing unusual.
But Bloom's report described severe confusion.
He later recommended medication adjustments.
Vanessa admitted she had followed some of those recommendations.
Daniel stared at her.
"You gave my mother medication knowing the purpose was to make her look incompetent."
Vanessa shook her head.
"I thought it would make her sleep."
"That is not a defense."
"I know."
Margaret watched Vanessa carefully.
"Why are you telling us this now?"
Vanessa wiped her face.
"Because Colin was never going to let me leave."
Daniel almost laughed.
"You expect sympathy?"
"No."
Vanessa looked at him.
"I expect nothing from you."
For the first time since Daniel returned home, the sentence sounded sincere.
Rachel handed the USB to Omar.
The files were encrypted.
Vanessa gave them the password.
CROWNMERIDIAN.
Inside were thousands of documents.
Fake consulting invoices.
Transfer schedules.
Shell-company registrations.
Loan documents.
And a folder labeled MC HEALTH.
Margaret Carter.
The folder contained altered medical records.
Email conversations.
Instructions from Colin.
One message made Daniel grip the edge of the table.
Need worsening observations before Q3 vote. Increase documentation. V can manage household presentation.
Household presentation.
His mother had been turned into a financial strategy.
Another email referenced Elena.
If employee refuses revised statement, replace and document theft incident.
Elena stared at the screen.
"The bracelet."
Rachel nodded.
"They planned to frame you."
Vanessa whispered, "I told Colin it was too dangerous."
Elena turned on her.
"But you planted it."
Vanessa said nothing.
That silence confirmed it.
Elena stood.
For months she had been quiet.
Careful.
Afraid that speaking too soon would leave Margaret alone.
Now her restraint broke.
"You watched her cry."
Vanessa looked down.
"You moved her things and told her she forgot."
No answer.
"You turned off her phone."
Silence.
"You locked her room."
Daniel looked sharply at Vanessa.
"You locked my mother inside her room?"
Vanessa's face tightened.
"It happened once."
Margaret corrected her.
"Three times."
Daniel took a step forward.
Margaret stopped him with one word.
"Daniel."
He froze.
Margaret looked at Vanessa.
"You want to know what I remember?"
Vanessa slowly raised her eyes.
"I remember every time."
Margaret's voice remained calm.
"Every door. Every missing object. Every pill. Every lie."
Vanessa began crying again.
Margaret did not soften.
"You wanted the world to believe my mind was disappearing."
She touched her chest.
"But I was watching you."
Vanessa whispered, "I'm sorry."
Margaret nodded slowly.
"Perhaps someday you will understand what those words require."
Police arrested Vanessa later that morning.
Not because Daniel demanded it.
Because the evidence justified it.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Forgery.
Suspected financial exploitation.
Possible elder abuse.
Vanessa did not resist.
Before officers took her away, she stopped beside Daniel.
"There is one thing you still don't know."
He looked at her.
"Colin doesn't care about the money anymore."
"What does he care about?"
"Destroying the company."
"Why?"
"Because of his father."
Daniel remembered the recording.
James Mercer begging William to protect Colin.
"What does Colin think my father did?"
Vanessa gave a tired smile.
"He thinks William Carter destroyed James Mercer."
Margaret frowned.
"James destroyed himself."
Vanessa looked at her.
"That's not the story Colin grew up hearing."
Then officers led her outside.
Within hours, police located Dr. Bloom.
He initially denied everything.
Then investigators showed him Colin's emails.
Bloom requested an attorney.
Rachel spent the afternoon coordinating banks, accountants, and board members.
The twelve million remained missing.
Carter Development's lenders began asking questions.
News leaked.
By evening, financial reporters were calling.
Daniel's company was suddenly associated with fraud, offshore transfers, and internal corruption.
None of it had been his doing.
But it was his responsibility to fix.
At six thirty, Daniel stood before an emergency board meeting.
Some directors wanted him to resign temporarily.
Others supported him.
One asked the question Daniel expected.
"How did the CEO fail to notice twelve million dollars disappearing?"
Daniel could have blamed Colin.
Saudi Arabia.
Fake records.
Instead, he said, "Because I trusted systems that were designed to deceive me, and because I delegated oversight I should have retained."
The room went quiet.
"I did not steal the money," Daniel continued. "But I am responsible for rebuilding the controls that allowed someone else to steal it."
That answer changed the meeting.
The board voted to keep him.
Rachel later found him alone.
"You may have saved your job."
"I don't care about my job."
"You will."
Daniel looked toward the mansion windows.
"I care about my mother."
Rachel nodded.
"Then you should know something."
She opened her laptop.
Omar had recovered an audio file from Vanessa's USB.
A call between Colin and Vanessa recorded one week earlier.
Colin said:
If everything fails, we use the Saudi guarantee.
Vanessa asked:
What does that mean?
Colin replied:
It means Daniel signed away more than he knows.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
"What Saudi guarantee?"
Rachel's face was grim.
"The one attached to your project financing."
"I read that agreement."
"You read the version Colin sent you."
Daniel stared at her.
May you like
She continued.
"The bank received a different version."
