Chapter 7 - The Last Night of William Carter

Daniel had not heard his father's voice in eight years.

The sound nearly broke him.

William looked older than Daniel remembered.

Tired.

Angry.

But unmistakably himself.

On the recording, James Mercer paced across the office.

William remained behind the desk.

"You used company accounts to cover your son's debt."

James stopped.

"Colin was twenty-three."

"He stole from investors."

"He made a mistake."

"You hid it."

"I protected my son."

William's voice hardened.

"You used my company to do it."

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel could barely breathe.

The recording continued.

James placed both palms on the desk.

"If you expose this, Colin goes to prison."

"That decision belongs to prosecutors."

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

James looked desperate.

Then he said something none of them expected.

"Colin knows about Margaret's trust."

William became very still.

"What does that mean?"

"He copied the documents."

"Why?"

"Insurance."

William stood.

"Get out."

"William."

"Get out of my house."

James slowly walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned.

"Your son thinks the world is cleaner than it is."

William answered, "Then I hope he stays that way."

The video ended.

Daniel stared at the black screen.

Rachel said quietly, "Your father knew Colin had trust documents eight years ago."

"And he never told me."

Margaret looked at her son.

"He was going to."

Daniel turned.

"How do you know?"

"The morning he died, he told me there was something he needed to discuss with you."

William had collapsed at the company gym before noon.

A heart attack.

Natural causes.

No mystery.

No crime.

But his death had prevented the conversation.

Daniel sat down.

All these years, he had believed his father died leaving behind an overly complicated estate structure.

Now he understood the truth.

The restrictions were not about control.

They were defenses.

William had known someone possessed copies of the trust.

He designed layers of approval so no single person could seize the estate.

Vanessa and Colin had spent years finding a way around those defenses.

Guardianship was the answer.

If Margaret lost legal authority, they could control her vote.

If Daniel signed the Saudi financing package, Colin could redirect corporate liabilities.

Then Meridian would purchase distressed assets through hidden debt.

The company would collapse.

The mansion would become vulnerable.

The Carter family would lose everything.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

"The Saudi contract may have been manipulated from the beginning."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"What do you mean?"

"Who introduced it?"

"Colin."

"Who negotiated the financing?"

"Colin."

"Who insisted you personally supervise the first phase?"

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa had insisted.

But Colin had repeatedly said Daniel's presence reassured investors.

Rachel closed the laptop.

"They engineered your absence."

A sound came from upstairs.

A door slammed.

Daniel stood.

Elena went toward the staircase.

Then stopped.

"Mrs. Carter."

Margaret had gone pale.

"What?"

"My medicine."

She touched her chest.

"The blue case."

Elena ran upstairs.

Daniel followed.

They entered Margaret's bedroom.

The medication drawer was open.

Empty.

Elena turned.

"It was here this morning."

Daniel's anger became immediate.

"Vanessa."

He called her.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Elena checked another drawer.

Then the bathroom.

Finally she found the medication case inside the wastebasket beneath towels.

"Here."

Margaret took the prescribed tablet.

Within minutes, her breathing steadied.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

This was no longer financial manipulation.

His mother's health had been used as leverage.

Rachel called the police.

This time Daniel did not object.

Officers arrived forty minutes later.

Vanessa was gone.

Her car remained in the garage.

So did her phone.

That meant someone had collected her.

Daniel knew who.

Colin.

Police issued alerts.

Rachel contacted the board of Carter Development.

By evening, Colin's access had been suspended.

But before the suspension took effect, someone executed one final transfer.

Twelve million dollars.

From a project reserve account.

Into Meridian Infrastructure Holdings.

Then the money disappeared through three overseas accounts.

Rachel stared at the transaction log.

"He knew."

Daniel looked at the time stamp.

The transfer occurred eighteen minutes after Vanessa left the mansion.

"She warned him."

"Probably."

Omar interrupted.

"There's something else."

He had continued reviewing the office archive.

Vanessa had returned to William's office two nights earlier.

Alone.

She carried an envelope.

She placed it behind a loose wooden panel beneath William's bookshelf.

Daniel and Rachel went upstairs.

They opened the panel.

The envelope remained there.

Inside was a passport.

Cash.

And a handwritten list of bank account numbers.

At the bottom was an address.

Norfolk Marina.

Slip 44.

Daniel looked at Rachel.

"They planned an escape."

Rachel nodded.

"Maybe they still do."

Daniel checked the time.

It was nearly nine.

Norfolk was several hours away.

Police were notified.

But Daniel suddenly remembered something from the video.

Vanessa had hidden the escape package instead of taking it.

Why?

Because she had expected to return.

That meant Vanessa believed the mansion contained something she still needed.

Daniel looked toward his father's office.

Then he understood.

"The archive."

Rachel frowned.

"What about it?"

"Vanessa knew evidence existed somewhere in this house."

"She didn't know where."

"Now she does."

May you like

Daniel looked at the security cabinet.

"We showed her."
