Chapter 8 - The Return After Midnight

Police remained at Hawthorne Ridge until nearly eleven.
They photographed the living room.
Interviewed Margaret.
Interviewed Elena.
Collected copies of the forged guardianship documents.
Then they left one patrol car near the entrance.
Daniel should have slept.
Instead, he sat inside his father's office.
The old recordings played silently on the monitor.
Margaret entered just after midnight.
"You look like him."
Daniel did not turn.
"I spent years trying not to."
"That isn't what I meant."
Margaret sat opposite him.
"When William was afraid, he became quiet."
Daniel stared at the screen.
"I left you here."
"You were working."
"Vanessa encouraged me to go."
"You trusted your wife."
"I trusted Colin."
"That wasn't a crime."
"It was stupidity."
Margaret leaned forward.
"Daniel."
He finally looked at her.
"Do not turn their betrayal into evidence against yourself."
Daniel's eyes filled.
"I saw you on that floor."
"And you came through the door."
"Too late."
"No."
Margaret reached across the desk.
"You came before she finished what she was trying to do."
Daniel gripped his mother's hand.
A soft knock interrupted them.
Elena entered.
"Sir."
"What?"
"I heard something near the service entrance."
Daniel stood.
"Stay with Mom."
He called the patrol officer.
No answer.
Then he looked through the office window.
The patrol car's lights were off.
A shadow moved near the hedges.
Daniel's pulse accelerated.
He locked the office.
"Nobody leaves this room."
"What are you doing?" Margaret asked.
"Checking the hall."
"Daniel."
He opened the door.
The mansion was silent.
He walked toward the staircase.
A faint sound came from below.
Glass.
Breaking.
Daniel descended.
The rear library door was open.
Cold night air entered the house.
Then a figure stepped from the darkness.
Vanessa.
Daniel froze.
She looked exhausted.
Her dress from earlier had been replaced by jeans and a black coat.
"Where's Colin?"
She stared at him.
"You think I'm still with him?"
"You left with him."
"I left because I was terrified."
"Of consequences."
"Of Colin."
Daniel did not move.
Vanessa took one step forward.
"He lied to me too."
"Convenient."
"I didn't know about the offshore transfers."
"You knew enough."
"I knew he was restructuring debt."
"You tried to take guardianship of my mother."
Vanessa looked down.
"I thought she would be moved into private care."
"You abused her."
"I lost control."
"Repeatedly?"
Silence.
Daniel felt disgust.
Vanessa began crying.
"You don't know what Colin is capable of."
"Then tell the police."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because he has something on me."
Daniel laughed without humor.
"After today, that's supposed to surprise me?"
Vanessa reached into her coat.
Daniel tensed.
She pulled out a USB drive.
"Everything is on this."
"What?"
"The original plan."
Daniel stared.
Vanessa held it out.
"He kept copies of the fake contracts. Account structures. Passwords. Records of the transfers."
"Why do you have it?"
"I stole it."
"When?"
"Tonight."
"Where is Colin?"
Vanessa looked toward the windows.
"Looking for me."
Daniel did not take the drive.
"Put it on the table."
She did.
"Step back."
Vanessa obeyed.
Daniel called Rachel.
No answer.
Then police.
This time the dispatcher responded.
As Daniel spoke, the house lights suddenly went out.
Vanessa screamed.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Daniel grabbed the edge of the table.
"Don't move."
A crash came from upstairs.
Margaret.
Daniel ran.
He took the stairs two at a time.
Emergency lighting flickered on.
The office door stood open.
Elena was in the hallway.
"Someone came through the balcony."
"Mom?"
"Inside."
Daniel rushed in.
Margaret was safe.
But the security cabinet was open.
The main archive drive was gone.
Daniel turned.
Elena pointed toward the balcony.
A man disappeared over the railing.
Daniel ran after him.
He reached the balcony just in time to see a figure drop onto the garden roof below.
Colin.
"Stop!"
Colin looked up.
For one second, the two men saw each other clearly.
Then Colin jumped to the lawn and ran.
Police vehicles entered the front drive moments later.
But Colin escaped through the cedar woods.
Daniel returned inside.
Vanessa sat on the living room floor with her hands visible while officers surrounded her.
She looked at Daniel.
"He took it, didn't he?"
"The archive drive."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Then we're finished."
Daniel walked toward her.
"No."
She looked up.
"My father built backups."
Vanessa's face changed.
Daniel continued.
"And Colin doesn't know which recording matters most."
Neither did Daniel.
Not yet.
But Omar arrived before dawn.
When told the main drive had been stolen, he smiled slightly.
"Good."
Daniel stared.
"Good?"
"I cloned it six hours ago."
Daniel almost laughed.
Omar held up an encrypted external drive.
"Never examine original evidence without creating a forensic copy."
Rachel arrived moments later.
She looked at Vanessa.
Then at Daniel.
Then at the USB on the table.
"If that contains what she claims, we can rebuild the money trail."
Vanessa spoke quietly.
"There's more."
Everyone turned.
She looked toward Margaret.
"The medical reports."
Margaret stiffened.
"What reports?"
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"Colin paid Dr. Bloom."
Daniel's face hardened.
"To lie about my mother?"
"To create documentation supporting cognitive decline."
Elena whispered, "I knew it."
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. You don't understand."
She looked at Daniel.
"Bloom didn't just write false reports."
"What did he do?"
May you like
Vanessa hesitated.
Then said, "He changed her medication."
