Chapter 11 - The Marina

Federal agents reached the marina before Daniel.

They found the survey boat.

Empty.

Inside were food supplies, cash, two laptops, and printed copies of Carter Development's internal network maps.

Colin had been there recently.

But he escaped again.

One laptop contained a folder labeled FINAL.

Inside were plans to release manipulated company documents to journalists.

The documents made it appear Daniel personally authorized the offshore transfers.

Colin intended to destroy Daniel publicly even if he could not take the company.

Rachel compared the manipulated records with originals.

"They're convincing."

"Can we disprove them?"

"Yes."

"Quickly?"

Rachel hesitated.

That answer worried Daniel.

Reputations could collapse long before facts caught up.

At noon, several anonymous files appeared online.

Headlines spread.

Carter CEO linked to secret offshore network.

Saudi project tied to missing millions.

Family dispute raises questions about company finances.

Daniel's phone exploded.

The board called another emergency meeting.

Clients demanded explanations.

One project partner threatened suspension.

Daniel wanted to fight every headline.

Rachel stopped him.

"Do not argue with the internet."

"So I say nothing?"

"You say what we can prove."

Daniel recorded a short public statement.

He acknowledged an internal fraud investigation.

Confirmed cooperation with authorities.

Denied authorizing the offshore transfers.

And promised full independent review.

Then he returned to what mattered more.

Margaret.

She had been examined by her longtime physician, Dr. Alice Monroe.

After reviewing Bloom's prescriptions and blood tests, Dr. Monroe found evidence consistent with inappropriate medication changes.

Margaret was expected to recover fully.

No dementia.

No cognitive collapse.

No incompetence.

When Daniel told her, Margaret smiled.

"I could have told you that."

He laughed for the first time in days.

Elena stood nearby.

Margaret reached for her hand.

"You could have left."

Elena shrugged.

"So could you."

Margaret looked amused.

"It is my house."

"Exactly."

Their friendship had become one of the few good things to emerge from the nightmare.

Daniel offered Elena a large bonus.

She refused.

He offered again.

She refused again.

Finally Margaret said, "Stop insulting her."

Daniel frowned.

"I'm trying to thank her."

"Then ask what she wants."

Daniel looked at Elena.

"What do you want?"

Elena hesitated.

"I want to finish nursing school."

Daniel blinked.

"You were in nursing school?"

"Two years ago. I stopped when my father died."

Margaret smiled.

"Then we know what to do."

Elena protested immediately.

Margaret ignored her.

The argument lasted twenty minutes.

Elena eventually agreed to accept tuition assistance as a loan.

Margaret secretly had no intention of ever collecting it.

That evening, Daniel received another message.

This time from Colin.

A video.

Colin stood inside a dark room.

"You want the twelve million?"

Daniel watched silently.

Colin continued.

"Come alone tomorrow night."

An address appeared.

An abandoned Carter Development warehouse near the Potomac River.

Rachel immediately contacted federal agents.

Daniel replayed the video.

Something bothered him.

Colin looked calm.

Too calm.

"He knows I'll involve police."

Rachel nodded.

"So it's a trap."

"For whom?"

They examined the background.

Omar enhanced the image.

Behind Colin, a faded sign showed part of an old project number.

Rachel recognized it.

"That's not the Potomac warehouse."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Where is it?"

"That's the old Hawthorne materials depot."

Ten miles from the mansion.

The address Colin sent was fake.

He wanted law enforcement at the wrong location.

Daniel's blood went cold.

"If he doesn't want police at the warehouse..."

Rachel finished the thought.

"He wants them away from something else."

Daniel was already running toward his car.

Hawthorne Ridge.

Margaret.

Elena.

He called the house.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

He called Elena.

The line connected.

She whispered.

"Sir."

"Where are you?"

"In the kitchen."

"Where's Mom?"

"Upstairs."

"What happened?"

"The power just went out."

Daniel's heart stopped.

"Lock the doors."

May you like

Then Elena said, "Someone is already inside."

The call ended.
