Chapter 9 - Sarah Takes Back Her Name
The weeks after David’s arrest were difficult, but they were no longer silent.
Sarah and the children stayed with Melissa while investigators examined the financial records. A judge issued an immediate protective order and temporarily granted Sarah full custody.
David’s attorney argued that the situation had been misunderstood.
The evidence proved otherwise.
The forged prescriptions came from a clinic that had never treated Sarah. The custody papers contained signatures copied from old tax forms. The passport applications had been supported by false declarations.
Financial investigators traced Sarah’s inheritance through Northbridge Family Holdings and into accounts David controlled.
Most of the money was recovered before it could be transferred overseas.
The surveillance recordings became the strongest evidence. David had believed the cameras gave him power, but their unedited files documented years of manipulation.
Sarah returned to the house once, accompanied by an officer, to collect personal belongings.
The bedroom looked smaller than she remembered.
Chloe’s purple notebook remained beneath the loose board in the closet. Sarah read every page while sitting on the floor.
She cried when she realized how much her daughter had seen.
That evening, Sarah told Chloe something she wished she had understood earlier.
“It was never your job to protect me.”
Chloe looked down.
“But what if I hadn’t called?”
“You were brave, and your call mattered. But what happened was not your responsibility. It was his.”
Sarah began counseling, reopened her design portfolio, and created a bank account in her own name.
The first deposit was small.
Still, she stared at the receipt for several minutes.
