Chapter 8 - What the Police Found
David was taken downstairs in handcuffs while Sarah and the children remained with an officer in the bedroom.
Ethan refused to release Chloe’s hand.
Sarah moved toward them slowly and knelt.
“You saved us,” she said.
Chloe began crying.
“I took Dad’s phone. Am I in trouble?”
“No.” Sarah pulled both children into her arms. “You are not in trouble.”
Downstairs, officers searched David’s office after observing the surveillance screens through the open doorway.
They discovered digital recordings organized by date. Many clips showed arguments beginning only after David had hidden keys, disabled phones, or confronted Sarah with false accusations. Other recordings had been edited to remove his voice.
A locked cabinet contained cash, forged medical forms, and legal documents granting David control over Sarah’s property.
In the garage, the family SUV had been packed with clothes, bottled water, and two children’s suitcases.
A laptop on the passenger seat displayed airline reservations scheduled for the following morning.
The tickets were one-way.
David, Chloe, and Ethan were listed as passengers.
Sarah was not.
Investigators also found messages between David and a document specialist who had helped create false signatures. Another conversation revealed that David planned to report Sarah as missing after leaving the country.
He intended to claim she had abandoned the family.
Melissa arrived at the house shortly after two in the morning. When Sarah saw her sister enter, the strength she had forced herself to maintain finally disappeared.
Melissa held her while officers carried evidence outside.
David watched from the back seat of a police car.
