Chapter 7 - The Night Everything Broke
On the night Chloe called the police, David received an alert that Sarah had accessed the online account containing the bank statement photograph.
He entered the bedroom shortly before midnight.
Sarah sat on the bed holding her tablet.
“What is Northbridge?” she asked.
David closed the door behind him.
“We discussed this.”
“No, you dismissed me.”
She turned the screen toward him. It showed company records, bank transfers, and a scanned document bearing her forged signature.
“You transferred my inheritance. You used my name to open accounts. You created medical records that aren’t real.”
David’s face flushed.
“Lower your voice.”
“Were you planning to take the children?”
“You’re confused.”
“I saw the passport applications.”
That statement changed him.
For the first time, his calm mask disappeared.
He demanded to know who had entered his office. Sarah refused to answer.
Chloe and Ethan stood in the hallway listening.
David moved closer to Sarah, accusing her of destroying the family. Sarah backed away until she reached the side of the bed.
When his voice rose, Chloe pulled Ethan into the closet.
David did not touch Sarah, but he blocked the door and told her she would never see the children again if she tried to expose him.
Sarah’s knees gave way. She sat on the wooden floor, crying as David paced across the room.
Inside the closet, Chloe turned on the emergency phone.
She called 911 and whispered their address.
The dispatcher asked whether anyone was injured.
“No,” Chloe answered. “But my dad has passports. He says he’s taking us away. My mom needs help.”
The dispatcher told her to remain hidden.
Then David heard the faint voice coming through the phone.
He turned toward the closet.

The emergency lights appeared at the window before Chloe could answer.
