Chapter 1 - The House That Never Slept
Three weeks earlier, Sarah woke at 2:17 in the morning and found David standing beside the bedroom window.
He was dressed in dark clothes, staring toward the driveway.
“Is something wrong?” she asked.
David turned so quickly that she flinched.
“Go back to sleep.”
His tone was quiet, but it carried the warning she had learned not to question.
Sarah closed her eyes and pretended to sleep. A few minutes later, she heard him leave the room. His footsteps moved downstairs, followed by the soft click of his office door.
David had always claimed he worked late because his construction company was struggling. Yet lately, he spent more time checking the locks, watching the street, and asking Sarah where she had been.
He controlled the bank accounts because he said she was careless with money. He kept the car keys because he said their neighborhood was unsafe at night. He read the children’s school messages because he said teachers often confused important details.
Each decision sounded reasonable when explained separately.
Together, they formed a cage.
Sarah had once been confident and independent. Before Chloe was born, she worked as an interior designer and managed projects across three states. After Ethan’s birth, David convinced her to stay home temporarily.
Temporary became five years.
Whenever Sarah mentioned returning to work, David reminded her that childcare was expensive. Whenever she suggested opening her own account, he accused her of planning to leave.
Sarah told herself that he was stressed.
She told herself that marriage required patience.
Most of all, she told herself that the children had never seen the worst moments.
She was wrong.

From the hallway, Chloe had been watching her father move through the dark house night after night.
And she had begun keeping a record.
