Chapter 15 - THE WILL THAT WAS NEVER ABOUT MONEY

Richard came ashore with Charles as a shield.

Federal agents took positions behind stone walls surrounding the lighthouse.

Naomi ordered everyone to hold fire.

Sadie watched through the security cameras as Richard pushed Charles's wheelchair toward the entrance.

Two armed men followed.

A third remained near the boat.

Wyatt said, "He wants inside."

Daniel shook his head.

"He wants the archive destroyed."

Richard's voice came through the speaker again.

"Sadie."

She pressed the intercom.

"I'm here."

"Come outside."

"No."

A chuckle.

"You finally learned something."

Sadie looked at Charles on the monitor.

His head was lowered.

"Is he alive?"

Charles lifted one hand weakly.

Richard said, "For the moment."

"What do you want?"

"The ledger."

"You know I won't give it to you."

"The ledger isn't for me."

Sadie looked at Naomi.

"For who?"

Richard went silent.

Then Charles suddenly raised his head.

"Don't tell her."

Richard struck him.

Sadie's body reacted instantly.

Wyatt caught her arm.

"Don't."

Richard spoke into the intercom.

"You see, this is what your grandfather never understood. He thought secrets were protection."

Charles wiped blood from his mouth.

Richard continued.

"But secrets are debt."

Sadie said, "Who's collecting?"

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"Your real family."

The words landed harder than the brick ever could.

Sadie gripped the intercom.

"Who is Evelyn?"

Richard smiled.

Charles's face filled with fear.

Not for himself.

For Sadie.

Richard said, "Ask him."

"Grandfather?"

Charles shook his head.

"Sadie, listen to me. Whatever he tells you, do not leave this island with him."

Richard laughed.

"Still giving orders."

Then he leaned near Charles.

"Tell her what the will actually does."

Sadie's stomach tightened.

"What does he mean?"

Charles closed his eyes.

"Grandfather."

Slowly, Charles looked toward the camera.

"The trust does not simply give you Carter Meridian."

Sadie waited.

"It transfers custody."

She frowned.

"Custody of what?"

Richard answered for him.

"You."

Silence.

Wyatt said, "She's twenty-eight years old."

Richard laughed.

"Not legal custody."

Charles's voice weakened.

"Contractual control."

Sadie felt cold.

"Explain."

Charles looked ashamed.

"When you marry voluntarily, the trust activates and the estate becomes yours."

"I know."

"But one hidden schedule activates with it."

"What schedule?"

Charles said nothing.

Richard pressed the gun harder against him.

Sadie shouted, "Stop."

Charles finally spoke.

"The Meridian Covenant."

Daniel froze.

Naomi looked at him.

"You know that name?"

Daniel whispered, "I thought it was a myth."

Sadie said, "What is it?"

Charles looked toward the camera.

"A private agreement signed before you were born."

"By whom?"

"People who financed the original network."

"What does it have to do with me?"

Charles's eyes filled.

"Everything."

Richard smiled.

"The family trust was never designed to make you rich, Sadie."

He leaned closer to the camera.

"It was designed to identify you."

Wyatt whispered, "Identify her to who?"

Richard's smile vanished.

"To the people who have been looking for her since 1998."

Gunfire erupted near the dock.

Everyone dropped.

Naomi shouted orders.

The exterior camera shook.

One of Richard's men fell.

The other fired toward the tree line.

Richard grabbed Charles's wheelchair and dragged him behind a stone wall.

Daniel checked another camera.

"Boat on the north shore."

Naomi stared.

"That's not ours."

A second vessel had arrived.

Black hull.

No registration numbers.

Six figures in tactical clothing moved onto the island.

They did not approach Richard.

They moved directly toward the lighthouse.

Sadie felt her blood turn to ice.

Richard was not their leader.

He was afraid of them.

Richard screamed into the intercom.

"OPEN THE DOOR!"

Charles shouted, "Don't!"

Richard fired at the lock.

The reinforced door held.

Naomi radioed for support.

No response.

She tried again.

Nothing.

Daniel checked communications.

"They're jamming us."

Wyatt looked at Sadie.

"We use the service tunnel."

Daniel nodded.

"South side. Leads to the old keeper's cottage."

Sadie refused.

"I'm not leaving Charles."

Naomi said, "You staying here won't save him."

Another gunshot.

Then silence.

The camera feed flickered.

One of the new arrivals walked into view.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

No mask.

He wore a dark suit beneath a tactical vest.

Charles saw him.

Even through the grainy video, Sadie watched the old man's face collapse.

Richard whispered something.

The newcomer struck him so hard he fell.

Then the man crouched beside Charles.

He said something the camera microphone did not catch.

Charles shook his head.

The man smiled.

Then looked directly at the camera.

Directly at Sadie.

He reached into his coat.

Removed a photograph.

Held it up.

A woman stood in the image.

Young.

Dark-haired.

Holding a newborn baby.

On the back, visible through the zoomed camera, were three handwritten words.

EVELYN AND SADIE.

Sadie's heart stopped.

The stranger spoke toward the camera.

This time the microphone caught every word.

"Sadie Carter."

He smiled.

"Your mother is alive."

Wyatt stared at the screen.

Sadie could not move.

The man continued.

"And she's been waiting twenty-eight years for Charles Carter to finally give you back."

Charles suddenly shouted.

"HE'S LYING!"

The stranger's smile widened.

"Then open the Meridian Covenant and see for yourself."

Daniel turned toward the central archive table.

"The covenant isn't here."

Charles looked at the camera.

His face changed.

He realized something.

Sadie saw it.

"Grandfather."

Charles whispered, "The envelope."

"What envelope?"

"The one I gave Daniel."

Sadie's breath caught.

The cream-colored envelope.

The ambulance.

Harrison Cole's card.

Daniel slowly reached into the inside pocket of his work jacket.

He had kept the original envelope.

Sadie grabbed it.

She tore apart the inner lining.

Something thin and metallic fell into her palm.

A small key.

And beneath it, written inside the paper seam, was a safe-deposit number.

CHARLESTON FEDERAL TRUST

BOX 914

AUTHORIZED HOLDER:

SADIE E. VALE

Sadie stared at the surname.

Not Carter.

Vale.

Outside, the unknown man raised his voice.

"Open the door, Sadie."

Richard lay bleeding in the grass.

Charles struggled against the stranger's grip.

Naomi aimed toward the entrance.

Wyatt stood beside Sadie.

The metallic key felt impossibly heavy in her hand.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

No signal.

No internet.

Yet somehow a message appeared.

UNKNOWN:

Do not trust Charles.

A second message followed.

Do not trust Richard.

Then a third.

Especially do not trust the man at the door.

Sadie stared at the screen.

A fourth message appeared.

Your mother never gave you away.

They stole you from her.

Then came a photograph.

Recent.

A woman in her late fifties stood beside a hospital window.

She had Sadie's eyes.

Below the image was one sentence.

EVELYN IS READY TO TELL YOU WHO ORDERED YOUR ABDUCTION.

Sadie looked up at Charles on the security monitor.

At Richard bleeding beside him.

At the stranger waiting outside.

Then down at the key marked for Sadie E. Vale.

Wyatt spoke quietly.

"Whatever is in Box 914, they all want it."

Sadie closed her fist around the key.

"No."

Her eyes remained on the photograph of Evelyn.

"They're afraid I'll read it."

A deafening explosion hit the northern side of the lighthouse.

The archive lights went out.

Emergency lights flashed red.

Someone began cutting through the reinforced door.

Naomi shouted, "Tunnel. Now."

Wyatt pulled Sadie toward the service passage.

Daniel grabbed the fourth ledger.

Before disappearing into the darkness, Sadie looked one final time at the monitor.

Charles had managed to turn toward the camera.

His lips moved.

No audio.

But Sadie understood the words.

Don't find Evelyn.

Then the screen went black.

Sadie stood frozen for half a second.

Why would her grandfather spend twenty-eight years protecting her from the very woman claiming to be her mother?

And why was every powerful person in her life suddenly terrified of a safe-deposit box under a name Sadie had never known belonged to her?

Wyatt squeezed her hand.

"Sadie."

Behind them, metal screamed as the archive door began to open.

Sadie tightened her grip on the key.

For the first time in her life, she was no longer running from her family's secrets.

She was running toward the one secret they had all tried to bury.

And somewhere in Charleston, inside Box 914, waited the truth about the night a newborn girl disappeared, a dead child took her place, and Charles Carter made a promise powerful enough to start a war twenty-eight years later.

The lighthouse door finally broke open.

A man's voice echoed through the darkness.

"Find her."

Sadie and Wyatt disappeared into the tunnel.

But before the emergency lights died completely, Daniel looked down at the fourth ledger in his hands.

A new line of ink was appearing across the final blank page.

As if someone had written it moments earlier.

SADIE HAS THE KEY.

PHASE 2 MAY BEGIN.

Daniel stopped breathing.

May you like

Below it appeared another sentence.

And this one carried tomorrow's date.
