Chapter 14 - THE GRANDFATHER WHO STARTED IT ALL

Sadie stared at Charles's name.
"No."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Naomi said nothing.
Wyatt asked the question Sadie could not.
"Charles created the network?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"Part of it."
Sadie turned toward him.
"You knew."
"I knew he wasn't innocent."
"You told me he was protecting us."
"He was."
"From something he helped build."
"Yes."
Sadie's laugh broke.
Every revelation seemed designed to destroy the previous one.
Charles had been victim.
Then prisoner.
Then protector.
Now architect.
Naomi read from the report.
"Carter Meridian was one of twelve companies used to move undisclosed funds through land development projects."
Sadie whispered, "Illegal money."
"Some of it."
"Whose?"
Naomi looked at her.
"People powerful enough that Jonathan Vale believed traditional prosecution would fail."
Daniel said, "Charles wanted out."
Sadie rounded on him.
"When?"
"After Eleanor died."
"Convenient."
"He started keeping ledgers."
"Also convenient."
"Sadie."
"No."
Her voice echoed through the archive.
"No more convenient versions."
Daniel stopped.
Sadie pointed at the shelves.
"My whole life is sitting in boxes because every adult around me decided I couldn't handle the truth."
Wyatt remained beside her.
Not speaking.
That mattered.
He did not interrupt.
He did not tell her to calm down.
Sadie turned toward Naomi.
"Read everything."
"That could take weeks."
"Then find what matters."
They found it sooner.
A cassette labeled VALE, JONATHAN — FINAL INTERVIEW.
Daniel placed it into an old player.
Static filled the room.
Then Jonathan Vale's voice.
"If anyone hears this, Charles Carter has agreed to cooperate."
Sadie's eyes closed.
"He gave me names, account structures, and transfer routes. In exchange, he wants protection for one person."
A pause.
"His granddaughter, Sadie."
Sadie opened her eyes.
Jonathan continued.
"I objected."
Her heartbeat accelerated.
"I told Charles Sadie wasn't his granddaughter."
Silence swallowed the room.
Daniel looked confused.
Jonathan's voice continued.
"He said biology was no longer relevant."
Sadie's skin prickled.
"What?"
Wyatt leaned closer to the recorder.
"He told me the child Victoria gave birth to was not the child Victoria brought home."
Nobody moved.
Jonathan continued.
"I believed Sadie was my biological daughter. Charles told me I was wrong."
Sadie gripped the table.
The tape crackled.
"According to Charles, Victoria's biological infant died within hours of delivery."
Sadie's knees nearly gave out.
Wyatt caught her.
"No."
Jonathan's voice continued.
"Charles arranged a substitution."
Daniel whispered, "Jesus Christ."
"He placed another newborn with Victoria and Richard."
Sadie could barely breathe.
"Why?"
The tape answered.
"Charles claimed the child's biological mother was in immediate danger."
Sadie's voice cracked.
"Who?"
Static.
Then Jonathan said:
"Her name was Evelyn—"
The tape stopped.
Daniel hit play.
Nothing.
The reel had been cut.
Sadie stared at it.
"Evelyn who?"
Naomi searched the box.
No continuation tape.
Wyatt held Sadie's shoulders.
"We'll find it."
A red light suddenly flashed above the archive door.
Daniel's face changed.
"Security trigger."
Naomi reached for her weapon.
"What kind?"
Daniel checked a wall panel.
"Boat approaching."
They pulled up exterior cameras.
A speedboat cut across the water toward the island.
Three armed men aboard.
And Richard.
Beside him, Charles sat slumped in a wheelchair.
Sadie stared at the screen.
Her grandfather was alive.
Richard held a handgun against his ribs.
The archive speaker suddenly activated.
Richard's voice filled the room.
"Hello, sweetheart."
May you like
Sadie looked toward the ceiling.
"You really shouldn't have opened that tape."
