Chapter 13 - THE NAME ON SADIE'S BIRTH CERTIFICATE

The call ended.
Sadie stared at the phone.
Wyatt said, "What did he mean?"
"I don't know."
But Daniel did.
Sadie saw it immediately.
"What?"
Daniel looked away.
"What aren't you telling me?"
"Charles wanted to tell you himself."
"Charles isn't here."
Daniel remained silent.
Sadie stepped closer.
"Who did he steal me from?"
Daniel exhaled.
"Your birth certificate is false."
The cemetery seemed to disappear around her.
"No."
"Richard Carter is your father legally."
"Biologically?"
Daniel did not answer.
Wyatt stared at him.
"Biologically?"
"No."
Sadie backed away.
It was too much.
Melanie was not Richard's daughter.
Now Sadie was not either.
"What the hell is this family?"
Daniel's voice softened.
"Your mother gave birth to you."
"So who's my father?"
"I don't know the full truth."
"Liar."
"I know a name."
Sadie stopped.
"Say it."
"Jonathan Vale."
Naomi Price turned sharply.
She knew the name.
Sadie noticed.
"Who is he?"
Naomi said, "If it's the same Jonathan Vale, he disappeared twenty-nine years ago."
"Doing what?"
"Federal financial crimes investigation."
Daniel added, "He was investigating Carter Meridian."
Sadie laughed weakly.
"Of course he was."
Naomi continued.
"Vale alleged that several private investment networks were laundering money through construction, land trusts, and municipal bonds."
"What happened?"
"He vanished."
"And somehow my mother became pregnant."
Daniel looked toward her.
"Charles believed Victoria and Jonathan had a relationship."
Sadie felt sick.
"Did Richard know?"
"Not until after you were born."
"Then why raise me?"
"Because Charles made him."
Sadie stared.
Daniel explained.
"Charles learned about you and amended the family structure. He publicly treated you as Richard's biological daughter and privately tied the succession trust to you."
"Why?"
"Maybe guilt."
"For what?"
Daniel did not answer.
Naomi said, "We need to reach Bellweather Island."
They flew by helicopter that afternoon.
From the air, the island looked deserted.
A narrow strip of forest.
An old lighthouse.
One stone house near the shore.
The coordinates led beneath the lighthouse.
There, hidden behind an iron door, they found a climate-controlled archive.
Shelves of boxes.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Passports.
Company seals.
Dozens of cassette tapes.
And on a central table, a leather ledger.
Sadie's hands shook as she opened it.
Names filled the pages.
Judges.
Bank executives.
Political donors.
Attorneys.
Police chiefs.
Several were dead.
Others very much alive.
Near the middle, Sadie found Richard Carter.
Beside his name:
RECRUITED 1998.
LEVERAGE: VICTORIA BELLAMY.
STATUS: UNRELIABLE.
Then Malcolm Reed.
Then Victoria.
Sadie turned pages faster.
A photograph fell out.
Young Victoria stood beside a man Sadie had never seen.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
Jonathan Vale.
He was holding a newborn.
Sadie.
On the back:
For my daughter, before they give her another man's name.
Sadie stopped breathing.
Wyatt caught her elbow.
Then Naomi spoke from across the archive.
"You need to see this."
She had opened another file.
Inside was Jonathan Vale's investigative report.
The final page contained a list titled:
May you like
PRIMARY ARCHITECTS.
Charles Carter's name was first.
