Chapter 12 - THE GRAVE THAT HELD NO BODY

St. Matthew's Cemetery sat behind an abandoned stone church two counties west.
Charles's mother, Eleanor Carter, had supposedly been buried there in 1989.
Daniel knew something Richard did not.
The grave had never contained Eleanor's body.
"She was cremated," Daniel explained as they drove.
"Then why the grave?"
"Insurance."
Sadie looked at him.
"Against what?"
"The family."
They arrived shortly before dawn.
Federal agents were already securing the cemetery.
Eleanor Carter's headstone stood beneath an enormous oak.
BELOVED MOTHER.
BELOVED FOUNDER.
BELOVED TRUTH-TELLER.
Sadie knelt.
"Truth-teller."
Daniel nodded.
"Eleanor wrote the original granddaughter clause."
"Why?"
"Because men in the Carter family had spent three generations passing control from father to son while daughters received decorative trusts."
Sadie almost smiled.
"So she changed it."
"Quietly."
Agents lifted the stone.
Beneath it sat a narrow metal vault.
Inside was no coffin.
Only document boxes.
Naomi Price opened the first.
Corporate ledgers.
The second contained photographs.
The third contained audio tapes.
Then Daniel lifted a fourth box.
Empty.
A folded note lay inside.
Richard had arrived first.
Sadie opened it.
You always were slower than me.
Dad
Wyatt cursed.
Naomi took the note.
"He has the fourth ledger."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"Richard thinks he does."
"What does that mean?"
Daniel reached into the empty box.
His fingers found a false bottom.
He lifted it.
Underneath rested a brass plate engraved with coordinates.
And a word.
SPARROW.
Sadie's childhood nickname.
Naomi said, "Coordinates."
Daniel entered them into his phone.
The map loaded.
Atlantic coast.
A small island.
Privately owned.
Wyatt read the name.
"Bellweather Island."
Sadie knew it.
Carter Meridian had owned the island decades ago.
Richard claimed it had been sold.
Daniel's expression changed.
"It wasn't."
Naomi asked, "What is there?"
Daniel looked toward Sadie.
"Your grandfather's real archive."
A gunshot shattered the morning.
Everyone dropped.
An agent shouted.
Another gunshot hit the stone beside Daniel.
Naomi dragged Sadie behind the oak.
"Sniper!"
Wyatt covered her with his body.
Agents spread through the cemetery.
A black pickup tore away from the road.
State police pursued.
Then Sadie's phone rang.
Richard.
She answered.
"Dad."
His breathing was calm.
"You should have stayed home."
"Where is Charles?"
"Alive."
"For how long?"
"Depends on you."
Sadie looked toward the grave.
"You don't have the ledger."
Silence.
She knew she had hit something.
Richard said, "You have no idea what you're touching."
"Then tell me."
"Your grandfather built Carter Meridian with men who do not forgive betrayal."
"Then why are you scared?"
Another silence.
Sadie stood behind the tree.
"You're not protecting the family."
Her voice hardened.
"You're afraid of whoever you stole from."
Richard whispered, "No, Sadie."
May you like
He almost sounded sad.
"I'm afraid of who your grandfather stole you from."
