Chapter 5 - What Ethan Heard

The morning of the funeral, Ethan refused breakfast.
Daniel dressed him anyway.
Black suit.
White shirt.
Dark tie.
"Your mother would want you to be strong," Daniel said.
Ethan looked at him through the mirror.
"You don't know what Mom wants."
Daniel's hands stopped on the tie.
Then he tightened it harder than necessary.
Ethan coughed.
Daniel loosened it.
For a moment, shame crossed his face.
Then it disappeared.
At the chapel, more than seventy people gathered.
Employees from Harrison Foundation.
Neighbors.
Former classmates.
Members of Sarah's extended family.
The coffin stood in the center beneath white flowers.
Closed.
Locked.
Rebecca Sloan arrived ten minutes before the service.
Daniel met her near the entrance.
"You were not invited."
"I represented Sarah's father for two decades."
"This is private."
Rebecca looked toward Ethan.
"No funeral with seventy guests is private."
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Leave."
"No."
They stared at one another.
Ethan watched from across the room.
Rebecca noticed him.
She touched two fingers lightly against her heart.
It was a gesture Sarah often used with Ethan.
I am here.
Ethan almost ran to her.
Daniel stepped between them.
The service began.
For fifteen minutes Ethan heard almost nothing.
People spoke about Sarah.
Her kindness.
Her work.
Her love for Ethan.
It felt wrong.
They spoke as though she were somewhere impossible to reach.
But she was ten feet away.
Inside wood.
At 10:26, Ethan heard the first sound.
Scratch.
He lifted his head.
No one else reacted.
Scratch.
He stood.
Daniel grabbed his wrist.
"Sit down."
"I heard something."
"Sit."
Ethan pulled away.
He walked toward the coffin.
Daniel followed.
Then Ethan heard it again.
A weak dragging sound beneath the lid.
His whole body went cold.
"Mom?"
Daniel grabbed him.
"Enough."
Ethan shouted.
"She's alive!"
People turned.
Daniel dragged him toward the aisle.
Ethan kicked free.
That was when he saw the chapel maintenance door open.
A worker had left a small toolbox unattended.
Inside was a saw.
Ethan ran.
Everything that followed happened faster than thought.
He grabbed it.
Dropped beside the coffin.
Started cutting.
Daniel screamed at him.
Guests stood.
The first knock came.
Then the second.
Then Daniel slapped him.
Then the latch opened.
Then his mother's hand appeared.
And the world Ethan had known ended.
After Sarah was removed from the coffin, paramedics placed her on a stretcher.
Her blood pressure was dangerously low.
Her breathing was shallow.
She had signs of severe dehydration and prolonged sedation.
One paramedic examined the marks around her wrists.
"Who restrained her?"
Daniel answered immediately.
"She must have done it herself during some kind of episode."
The paramedic stared at him.
"She tied both wrists together?"
Daniel said nothing.
Rebecca appeared beside Ethan.
She looked into the coffin.
Then at Daniel.
"You are finished."
Daniel's eyes hardened.
"You have no idea what happened."
Rebecca looked at Sarah.
"I know enough."
As paramedics prepared to leave, Sarah lifted one hand weakly.
"Ethan."
He came closer.
"The blue room," she whispered.
Daniel's reaction confirmed the phrase mattered.
Rebecca heard it too.
When the ambulance left, Daniel tried to follow.
A chapel employee blocked him.
"The paramedics asked that only the child accompany her."
"I'm her husband."
Rebecca stepped forward.
"And at this moment, possibly the last person she wants near her."
Daniel stared at her.
"You think you won something?"
Rebecca's voice remained calm.
"No, Daniel. I think an eight year old boy saved his mother from being buried alive."
Every person in the chapel heard her.
Daniel looked around.
The room had changed.
An hour earlier, these people had come to comfort him.
Now they were backing away.
Ethan rode in the ambulance holding Sarah's fingertips.
Rebecca followed by car.
Sarah drifted in and out of consciousness.
Once, her eyes opened.
"Ethan."
"I'm here."
"The key."
"I have it."
She exhaled.
"Don't give it to Dad."
"I won't."
"Promise."
"I promise."
Her eyes closed again.
At the hospital, Sarah was taken behind double doors.
Ethan sat in the waiting room with Rebecca.
For the first time since the coffin opened, he began shaking.
Rebecca wrapped a coat around him.
"Is Mom going to die?"
"I don't know."
"I should've opened it sooner."
Rebecca crouched in front of him.
"You opened it when every adult in that room believed you were wrong."
Ethan looked toward the doors.
"I heard her."
"You listened."
Tears ran down his face.
"Dad hit me."
Rebecca's expression changed.
"I saw."
"He never did that before."
She nodded slowly.
Ethan touched the brass key beneath his shirt.
"Mom said the blue room."
Rebecca stared at him.
"What blue room?"
Ethan wiped his face.
"There's a room in our basement. Mom painted the door blue before Grandpa died. Dad always keeps it locked."
"Do you know what's inside?"
"No."
Rebecca looked toward the hospital doors.
Then at the key.
Sarah had risked her last strength to mention one location.
Whatever lay behind that blue door mattered.

And Daniel knew it.
At that same moment, Daniel was already driving toward the Cole house.
