Chapter 10 - The Doctor Who Started Talking
Dr. Martin Kessler surrendered two days later.
He did not surrender because he felt guilty.
He surrendered because Daniel abandoned him.
Investigators found Kessler sitting in a motel room outside Albany with thirty thousand dollars in cash and two fake identification documents.
His attorney contacted prosecutors before questioning began.
Kessler wanted a deal.
Sarah was furious.
"He helped put me in a coffin."
Rebecca nodded.
"And if his testimony proves Daniel planned it, that testimony matters."
"He should spend the rest of his life in prison."
"He may."
Sarah looked through the hospital window.
She had been discharged but continued outpatient treatment.
The sedatives had caused irregular heart rhythm and temporary nerve weakness.
Doctors expected recovery.
The emotional damage was harder to measure.
Kessler's interview lasted nearly six hours.
By evening, Rebecca received a summary.
Daniel had approached Kessler four years earlier.
At first, Daniel asked hypothetical questions about drugs that could reduce pulse and respiration.
Kessler claimed he refused.
Then Daniel offered money.
The first payment was fifty thousand dollars.
The questions became experiments.
Daniel wanted to know whether a person could appear dead without actually dying.
Kessler researched sedative combinations.
Charles Harrison discovered some of the payments.
He confronted Daniel.
On the night Charles died, Daniel called Kessler to the house.
Kessler claimed Charles had already been injured when he arrived.
He said Daniel told him Charles had fallen.
But rather than calling emergency services immediately, Kessler administered medication.
"Why?" Sarah asked Rebecca.
Rebecca did not want to answer.
Sarah repeated.
"Why?"
"To prevent him from waking up."
Sarah closed her eyes.
Her father had survived the fall.
Daniel had made sure he did not survive long enough to speak.
Kessler also described the plan involving Sarah.
Daniel originally intended to wait several months after the trust transfers.
But Sarah discovered them sooner than expected.
The timeline collapsed.
Daniel panicked.
After Sarah confronted him, he ordered Kessler to sedate her.
Kessler believed Daniel would move Sarah to another location and force her to sign documents.
Instead, Daniel announced she was dead.
Kessler protested.
Daniel threatened to expose Kessler's involvement in Charles's death.
So Kessler signed the death certificate.
They moved Sarah to the clinic.
Administered another drug.
Transferred her to the funeral home using falsified medical documentation.
Daniel demanded the coffin remain closed.
Kessler estimated Sarah would remain unconscious through the funeral.
He was wrong.
Ethan's mother began waking less than an hour before the service.
The scratching Ethan heard had been Sarah trying to reach the coffin lid.
Sarah sat completely still as Rebecca finished.
Then she asked one question.
"Where is Daniel?"
"They still don't know."
But Daniel knew where Sarah was.
That evening, flowers arrived at the Cole house, where Sarah and Ethan were temporarily staying under security.
White lilies.
The same flowers used at her funeral.
Sarah stared at them from across the room.
Owen examined the card.
It contained six words.
You were always difficult to bury.
Ethan saw Sarah's face.
"What does it say?"
"Nothing you need to read."
Sarah handed the card to Owen.
"He's close."
Owen nodded.
Security increased.
The next morning, Rebecca received another message.
This time Daniel included a photograph.
It showed the Harrison model railway.
The station had been smashed.
Beneath the photograph:
You found Dad's little box.
Sarah read it.
Then another message appeared.
But you still haven't found mine.
Sarah frowned.
"What box?"
Ethan looked at the image.
Then at his mother.
"Maybe he means the box in the garage."
Sarah turned.
"What box in the garage?"
"The silver one Dad never lets me touch."
Daniel had kept a locked metal case inside a cabinet above his workbench for years.
Sarah had assumed it contained tools or firearm paperwork.
Investigators searched the garage.
The cabinet was empty.
But beneath it, taped to the underside of the workbench, they found a storage receipt.
Unit 317.
North County Storage.
Rental name: D. Harrison.
Sarah recognized the false surname immediately.
Daniel had used her father's name.
When investigators opened unit 317, they discovered exactly what Daniel meant.
His box was not a box.
