Chapter 13 - Daniel Comes for Ethan
The school was empty except for two staff members when Daniel arrived.
Security cameras captured him entering through a side gate.
He wore a maintenance jacket over his clothes.
He searched three classrooms.

Then the counseling room.
No Ethan.
By the time police arrived, Daniel had vanished again.
But something had changed.
He was desperate.

"He wants me to react."
Rebecca nodded.
"Then don't."
Ethan looked inside the backpack.
His notebooks were there.
Lunch box.
Pencils.
Then he frowned.
"My science folder is missing."
Sarah looked at him.
"Was anything important in it?"
Ethan thought.
Then his face changed.
"A picture."
"What picture?"
"A map of our cabin."
The Cole family owned a small cabin near Lake Mercer.
It belonged to Daniel before the marriage.
Remote.
Surrounded by forest.
Sarah had almost forgotten it existed.
Owen immediately contacted police near the lake.
Daniel's vehicle was found abandoned two miles from the cabin.

Daniel called Sarah.
She answered.
"Bring Ethan."
"No."
"I want to see my son."
"He doesn't want to see you."
"He's eight."
"He knows what you did."
"Because you told him lies."

"He opened my coffin, Daniel."
Silence.
"He heard me while you ordered everyone to leave me inside."
"I panicked."
"You slapped him because he was saving me."

Daniel's voice softened.

The one he used during their marriage.
"Sarah, come here."
"No."
"We can fix this."
"No."
"I love you."
Sarah closed her eyes.
Eleven years earlier, those words had changed her life.
Now they sounded empty.
"You don't know what that word means."
Daniel became angry.
"You think Rebecca cares about you? You think those foundation people care? Everyone wants your money."
"Maybe."
He stopped.
Sarah continued.
"But Ethan wanted his mother."
Daniel said nothing.
"And when every adult told him he was wrong, he still fought for me."
Daniel's breathing became heavier.
"Put him on."
Sarah looked at Ethan.
He shook his head.
"No."
Daniel heard him.
"Ethan?"
The boy stepped closer to the phone.
"You lied to me."
Daniel's voice changed instantly.
"Buddy, I never wanted you involved."
"You hit me."
"I was scared."
"You were scared Mom would get out."
Daniel said nothing.
Ethan's eyes filled, but his voice remained steady.
"I don't want to talk to you anymore."
He walked away.
Sarah watched him.
Then she said into the phone, "You heard him."
Daniel exploded.
"You turned him against me!"
"No."
Sarah's voice became quiet.
"You put his mother in a coffin."
Police negotiators signaled.
They were ready to enter.
Daniel suddenly laughed.
"You still think the coffin was the worst thing I did?"
Sarah froze.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel disconnected.
Officers entered moments later.
Daniel was arrested in the cabin kitchen without resistance.
But his final sentence remained.

Then investigators searched the cabin.

It was a custody petition Daniel had prepared eight months earlier.
He had planned to have Sarah declared mentally unstable.
Beneath it were forged psychiatric reports.
According to the reports, Sarah suffered delusions, paranoia, and dangerous behavior toward her son.
Daniel had been preparing to take Ethan from her long before she discovered the missing money.
