Chapter 11 - Eleven Years of Lies

Storage unit 317 contained photographs, financial records, duplicate keys, medical documents, voice recordings, and copies of Sarah's private correspondence.

Daniel had collected information on everyone close to her.

Rebecca.

Foundation executives.

Former employees.

Sarah's cousins.

Even teachers at Ethan's school.

"He built leverage," Owen said.

Sarah walked slowly between shelves.

"Against everyone."

One container held records from before Sarah and Daniel married.

That was the discovery that hurt most.

Daniel had researched the Harrison family before their first date.

He knew Sarah's father was wealthy.

He knew Sarah controlled a large trust.

He knew Charles had one daughter.

He knew the estimated estate value.

Sarah sat down.

"He didn't meet me by accident."

Rebecca found an old event program.

Daniel had told Sarah they first met by chance at a charity auction.

The program proved he had registered three weeks earlier through a company associated with Kessler.

Sarah laughed softly.

Rebecca looked at her.

"What?"

"He told me he hated charity dinners."

The laugh became a sob.

For eleven years, Sarah had built memories around a story that had never existed.

Ethan walked into the unit with Owen.

Sarah quickly wiped her face.

He held a small photograph.

"Mom."

She looked.

It showed Daniel standing beside an unknown woman nearly twelve years earlier.

On the back was a name.

Laura Bennett.

Rebecca searched the archive.

More documents.

Laura Bennett had been Daniel's girlfriend before Sarah.

She had disappeared shortly after Daniel began dating Sarah.

Not died.

Disappeared.

Police records showed Laura left her apartment without most belongings.

No body was found.

The investigation went cold.

Sarah felt sick.

"Was Daniel involved?"

"No evidence yet," Owen said.

Then they found an audio recorder.

One file was labeled L.B.

The recording began with a woman's frightened voice.

"You said you only wanted information about Sarah."

Daniel answered.

"I wanted access."

"You lied to me."

"You took the money."

"I didn't agree to hurt anyone."

Sarah's blood chilled.

Laura continued.

"I'm telling Charles Harrison."

The recording ended.

Rebecca looked at Owen.

"Find her case file."

That evening they learned something unexpected.

Laura Bennett was alive.

She had entered a protected domestic violence program in another state and changed her name.

After investigators contacted her, she agreed to speak.

Laura told them Daniel had hired her to obtain information about Sarah before their relationship began.

Laura worked for a financial services company that handled some Harrison Foundation records.

She gave Daniel schedules, event information, and basic family details.

She believed he wanted to pitch an investment opportunity.

When she realized he was targeting Sarah romantically, she confronted him.

Daniel threatened her.

He broke into her apartment.

Left photographs showing he had followed her younger sister.

Laura fled.

She never came forward because she believed Daniel's connections made him untouchable.

Now she agreed to testify.

Sarah listened to Laura's statement from beginning to end.

Then she looked at Rebecca.

"Everything started before me."

"Yes."

"It was always the money."

Rebecca shook her head.

"No. Money explains why he approached you. It doesn't explain eleven years."

Sarah understood.

Daniel liked control.

Money was part of it.

So was winning.

So was making people believe whatever version of reality benefited him.

Sarah's phone rang.

Unknown number.

Owen motioned for her to answer while the call was traced.

Sarah pressed speaker.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

"You've been busy."

Sarah said nothing.

"Found Laura?"

Still silence.

Daniel laughed.

"I always knew she'd crawl out eventually."

Sarah spoke.

"You killed my father."

Daniel paused.

Then said, "Your father hated me."

"That isn't an answer."

"He was going to destroy our family."

"You destroyed our family."

"No, Sarah. You did that when you started digging."

Owen pointed to the tracing screen.

More time.

Sarah kept him talking.

"You put me in a coffin."

Daniel sighed.

"You weren't supposed to wake up."

Everyone in the room went still.

Sarah's heart pounded.

There it was.

Not an explanation.

Not denial.

Admission.

Daniel realized too late.

He stopped speaking.

Sarah whispered, "Thank you."

"For what?"

"For finally telling the truth."

Daniel disconnected.

Owen looked at the trace.

"We got a location."

Sarah stood.

"Where?"

Owen's expression changed.

"Your father's house."

May you like

Daniel had gone back to the place where the first death happened.

And this time, he was waiting for Sarah.
