William gave him another name.

Aaron stopped cooperating at twenty-six.
Third House kept him because he knew too much to release and was too valuable to kill.
Samuel found him four years earlier.
Aaron taught Samuel patience.
Samuel taught Aaron hope.
“Where is the Living Ledger?” Edward asked.
Aaron looked at William.
“Inside him.”
Everyone stared.
William laughed.
“Ridiculous.”
Aaron touched the wall.
A biometric scanner appeared.
“The Ledger was too dangerous to store traditionally after Archive Zero.”
Thomas understood.
“Neural implant?”
Aaron shook his head.
“Authentication implant.”
William carried the decryption key in a subdermal device near his clavicle.
But the encrypted Ledger itself was distributed among Third House servers.
Without William alive, the database would become unreadable.
Edward looked at William.
His father smiled.
“That is why you cannot simply destroy me.”
Edward stepped closer.
“I don’t need to.”
Federal agents cuffed William.
For the first time, William looked uncertain.
Marcus arrived with Noah minutes later.
Together with Aaron and Samuel, they accessed Vault Four.
The Living Ledger opened.
The scale was worse than expected.
8,412 identities.
Some active.
Some deceased.
Some prepared.
Some marked AVAILABLE.
Government officials.
Teachers.
Doctors.
Journalists.
Parents.
Children.
People who had lived entire lives without knowing that somewhere a second biography waited for someone to inherit.
Then Lily found a familiar name.
CATHERINE CALDWELL.
Status:
ORIGINAL ACTIVE.
REPLACEMENT RETIRED.
Edward stopped breathing.
Catherine stared at the screen.
“What does retired mean?”
Aaron’s expression changed.
“It means there was another you.”
Thomas whispered, “Where?”
They opened the file.
The replacement had been created twenty-seven years earlier.

Claire Rowan.
Last known location:
Vermont.
Current status:
Alive.
Catherine looked at Edward.
William began laughing.
“You still don’t understand.”
Catherine turned.
