Chapter 21 - Twenty-Four ChildrenEmergency lights glowed red.

Sirens began.

Thomas pulled Samuel behind him.

William shouted for security.

Nothing happened.

Samuel smiled through his tears.

“I changed the doors.”

Edward stared at him.

“You?”

“Lily taught me.”

Thirty miles away, Lily looked at Marcus.

“I did?”

Marcus smiled.

“Archive Zero taught everybody.”

Samuel had found portions of Lily’s distributed code months earlier through a hidden terminal.

He could not escape.

So he learned the system.

He redirected the incendiary protocol away from sleeping quarters.

He unlocked internal doors.

And for six months he had quietly taught the other children what alarms meant.

The evacuation began immediately.

Not chaos.

Preparation.

Children emerged from rooms carrying shoes and coats.

Older students held younger hands.

Thomas took control.

“Follow Samuel.”

William grabbed Edward.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Edward removed his hand.

“I finally do.”

William’s voice rose.

“Those children have no lives outside this place.”

“Then they’ll build them.”

“They have identities waiting.”

“They’ll choose their own.”

“You think choice is kindness?”

“Yes.”

William stared at him with genuine contempt.

“You learned nothing.”

Edward looked toward Thomas.

His son, stolen at twelve, guiding children toward freedom.

He looked toward Samuel.

A son he had never known, who had spent months quietly disabling the system meant to kill him.

“No,” Edward said.

“I learned from them.”

Security doors suddenly slammed shut.

William stepped backward.

“The Ledger does not leave this house.”

Marcus’s voice came through Edward’s earpiece.

“He initiated physical isolation. I’m losing access.”

Lily interrupted.

“Samuel, where is the Ledger?”

Samuel pointed downward.

“Vault Four.”

Thomas looked toward Edward.

William smiled.

“You cannot reach it before lockdown.”

Samuel corrected him.

“He can.”

Everyone looked at the boy.

Samuel reached beneath his shirt.

A small brass key hung from a cord.

“The portrait boy gave it to me.”

Thomas froze.

“What portrait boy?”

May you like

Samuel looked confused.

“The other you.”
