Chapter 11 - The Doctor Who Collected Children

The van rocked above the ravine.

Malcolm Reed kept the syringe against Daniel’s throat. One rear wheel spun uselessly over empty air.

Edward stood ten feet away in the rain.

“You need me alive,” he said.

“I needed your blood authorization. The archive has already accepted it.” Malcolm glanced at the tablet bolted beside Daniel’s chair. “Now I need only an exit.”

Noah moved behind the wrecked security vehicle, searching for an angle.

Malcolm saw the motion reflected in the van’s cracked mirror.

“Tell your man to lower his weapon.”

Edward raised one hand. “Noah.”

The rifle appeared on the road.

Daniel’s eyes focused on Edward. He tapped one finger against the metal armrest.

Four. Two. Four.

Edward did not understand.

Malcolm smiled. “He thinks in systems. Useful, but exhausting.”

“You experimented on him.”

“I saved him. His degenerative condition would have killed him before six.”

“You abducted him from his mother.”

“Grace had already accepted one substituted child. We believed she possessed unusual caregiving resilience.”

Edward’s disgust sharpened. “You measured a mother’s love as a research variable.”

“We measured everything.”

The van shifted another inch.

Malcolm looked toward the driver’s seat. The unconscious driver’s weight pressed against the steering wheel. A warning light blinked on the dashboard.

Four. Two. Four.

Edward saw it now.

Four seconds between each blink. Two shorter flashes. Four again.

Daniel was signaling the van’s stabilization system.

The mobile unit had hydraulic anchors beneath the chassis. If triggered, they might hold it on the road.

Or push it over.

Edward needed to trust a boy he had never met.

“Your treatment failed,” Edward said.

Malcolm’s eyes narrowed.

“Daniel escaped your control. Thomas escaped your conditioning. Lily exposed your archive.”

“They performed precisely as designed.”

“No. They chose each other.”

Malcolm pressed the syringe harder.

Daniel moved.

His free hand struck the emergency control twice.

Hydraulic anchors punched into the asphalt. The van slammed downward and tilted away from the ravine. Malcolm lost his balance. Edward rushed forward.

The syringe fell.

Daniel twisted the restraint cable around Malcolm’s wrist while Edward seized his coat. Malcolm drove an elbow into Edward’s throat, but Noah reached the van and pulled Daniel clear.

The chassis groaned.

Malcolm clung to the door frame as the rear of the van slid over the edge.

Edward caught his wrist.

For one suspended moment, the man who had stolen his children hung above the ravine while Edward held his life.

Malcolm looked up. “You want to let go.”

Edward did.

He thought of Thomas in the laboratory bed. Lily monitored from infancy. Catherine imprisoned in grief. Grace denied her son. Anna erased from the world.

Then he thought of Thomas lowering the rifle.

Edward pulled Malcolm upward.

“No,” he said. “I want you to answer every question.”

Noah helped drag him onto the road and secured his wrists.

Daniel stood in the rain, thin shoulders trembling beneath a torn hospital shirt.

Edward did not touch him.

“Your mother is waiting.”

Daniel stared at him. “Lily?”

“She is safe.”

“Thomas?”

“Safe.”

Daniel’s knees buckled.

Edward caught him before he hit the pavement.

By the time they returned to the mansion, state police and federal tactical teams surrounded the estate. The archive release had triggered emergency warrants in multiple jurisdictions. Marcus had contacted three investigators he trusted and sent mirrored evidence before any single agency could suppress it.

Grace ran down the front steps.

Daniel stopped.

For nine years, each had imagined the other as dead.

Grace crossed the distance first.

She wrapped her arms around him, and Daniel made a sound so young that everyone nearby looked away.

Lily joined them.

Daniel touched the silver locket.

“You listened.”

“You scared me,” Lily said through tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Thomas stood a few feet away, uncertain where he belonged.

Daniel reached one arm toward him.

Thomas joined the embrace.

Edward watched the three children and Grace hold one another beneath the burning west wing.

Catherine came to stand beside him.

He wanted to take her hand. He did not know whether he still had the right.

“You saved Malcolm,” she said.

“For trial.”

“For yourself too.”

Edward looked at her. “Are you coming home?”

Catherine looked toward the mansion.

“This was never a home. It was a machine built to make us afraid of leaving.”

Before Edward could answer, Marcus approached with a recovered file.

“The public release exposed most of the network,” he said. “But Michael removed one section before Lily completed the transfer.”

“What section?”

Marcus handed Edward a single page.

At the top was a cedar-tree emblem above the words SECOND HOUSE.

Below it were twelve photographs of children.

One photograph showed Lily at age four.

Another showed Thomas at age fourteen.

The last showed a boy who looked exactly like Daniel.

But the date beneath the image was yesterday.

May you like

Daniel stared at it.

“That isn’t me.”
