Chapter 7 - The Marriage That Began as Surveillance

Maya listened to the audio recording three times.

Julian had obtained it legally through Vanessa’s attorney, who contacted Maya’s legal team less than an hour after Richard’s disastrous phone call.

The words remained impossible.

You never followed her.

You never went inside her apartment.

You never took anything.

Maya sat in a conference room beside Julian.

Her attorneys were across the table.

Thomas stood near the window.

Maya replayed the last part.

Vanessa’s silence.

Richard’s panic.

“They knew my mother.”

Julian nodded.

“Yes.”

“Richard entered my life on purpose.”

The room remained quiet.

Maya felt humiliated in a new way.

She thought of their first meeting.

A grocery store parking lot.

Her bag had ripped.

Oranges rolled beneath a car.

Richard helped collect them.

He joked that the universe had created the least romantic possible introduction.

Had it been planned?

Their second meeting happened at a coffee shop.

Coincidence, he had called it.

Their third at a community fundraiser.

Another coincidence.

Maya covered her face.

“How did I not see it?”

Attorney Claire Dawson leaned forward.

“You were grieving.”

“That doesn’t make me stupid.”

“No. It makes you human.”

Maya lowered her hands.

“I married someone who may have been watching me for whoever targeted my mother.”

Claire chose her words carefully.

“We don’t know the full purpose yet.”

Maya laughed without humor.

“I think we can stop giving Richard the benefit of uncertainty.”

Julian spoke.

“What matters now is evidence.”

Maya turned toward him.

“That sounds easy when it isn’t your marriage.”

Julian accepted the criticism.

“You’re right.”

Maya stood and walked toward the window.

Lily was in another room with Anna, building a cardboard castle.

Maya could hear her laughing faintly.

That sound kept Maya standing.

Thomas’s laptop chimed.

He looked down.

“We have something.”

Everyone turned.

Thomas had been examining Evelyn’s encrypted drive.

He opened a document titled VANCE.

It contained several pages of notes.

Evelyn had recorded Richard’s movements for six weeks.

Coffee shop.

Gym.

Office.

Meetings.

Payments.

One entry was highlighted.

R.V. receives monthly transfer from N.M. Contract ID 18-47. Purpose unclear.

Another:

O.V. instructs R.V. to maintain proximity to Maya if I am removed.

Maya gripped the chair.

Her mother had written it.

Maintain proximity to Maya.

Julian read over Thomas’s shoulder.

“Date?”

“Four days before Eleanor disappeared.”

Maya whispered, “She knew.”

Thomas scrolled.

Another line.

Maya must not know. If Richard approaches her after I am gone, Daniel must intervene.

Maya closed her eyes.

Daniel had never intervened.

Maybe he had been prevented.

Maybe he had disappeared himself.

Thomas continued.

“There are payments.”

He opened a spreadsheet.

Richard had received money from a Northstar entity beginning eight months before meeting Maya.

The payments continued for three years after their wedding.

Then stopped.

Maya stared at the totals.

“Why would they pay him after we married?”

Julian’s face hardened.

“To monitor you.”

“For what?”

“The ring.”

Maya touched the chain at her neck.

Thomas opened another note.

Subject unaware ring remains in her possession.

Maya stopped breathing.

Subject.

She had been a subject.

Not a wife.

Not even a person.

An objective.

Then Thomas opened a final file.

A scanned invoice.

Northstar Meridian Consulting.

The recipient was Richard Vance.

The service description read:

Domestic integration and asset recovery monitoring.

Maya stared at the words.

Domestic integration.

Marriage.

Asset recovery.

The ring.

Her mother.

Her entire relationship had been disguised as a love story.

Claire Dawson quietly said, “Maya, we can use this.”

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t want to use it.”

Claire paused.

“What do you mean?”

“I want to understand it.”

She looked at Julian.

“If they wanted this ring, why didn’t Richard take it?”

“Maybe he never found it.”

“He searched everything.”

“Did he know what it looked like?”

Maya remembered something.

Two years earlier, Richard had emptied her jewelry case during an argument about money.

He held up several necklaces.

Asked where her mother’s things were.

At the time Maya thought he wanted valuables.

She whispered, “He asked me whether Mom left me anything silver.”

Julian’s face changed.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“Exactly what did he say?”

Maya repeated it.

Thomas looked at Julian.

“He knew.”

Julian nodded.

Maya reached for the ring.

“If this was what they wanted, I want to know why.”

Thomas turned back to the encrypted drive.

“We may have an answer.”

He opened a hidden partition.

A folder appeared.

BLACKRIDGE.

Inside was a single audio file.

Dated the night Evelyn disappeared.

Maya pressed play.

Static.

A car door.

Her mother breathing.

Then Evelyn’s voice.

“If Daniel is right, Blackridge is not a place.”

More static.

“It’s a ledger.”

Footsteps.

Evelyn whispered urgently.

“The silver key opens the box. The box gives Maya the first layer. But the ring itself is the second.”

Maya looked down at it.

Evelyn continued.

“The engraving isn’t initials.”

A sound interrupted the recording.

Someone approaching.

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“If anything happens, tell Maya ASH is a cipher.”

A man’s voice appeared faintly.

“Eleanor?”

Evelyn gasped.

The recording ended.

Thomas froze the audio.

Julian stared at Maya.

Maya stared at the ring.

May you like

ASH was not a family emblem.

It was a cipher.
