Chapter 12 - The Mother Who Might Still Be Alive

Maya read the sentence until the words lost shape.
Eleanor survived Blackridge.
Her mother had left the warehouse alive.
Rachel immediately ordered the old investigation reconstructed from the beginning.
Vehicle records.
Traffic cameras.
Financial activity.
False identities.
Medical files.
Everything.
Maya returned to the safe residence and sat beside Lily’s bed for an hour without moving.
Lily eventually opened her eyes.
“Mommy?”
“I’m here.”
“Are you sad?”
Maya smiled faintly.
“A little.”
“Because Daddy?”
“Some of it.”
Lily touched Maya’s cheek.
“Is Grandma mad?”
Maya thought of Olivia in federal custody.
“She’s dealing with some grown-up consequences.”
Lily considered this.
“Did she break a rule?”
“Yes.”
“A big one?”
“Very big.”
Lily nodded solemnly.
“Then she needs timeout.”
Maya laughed.
It became a sob.
She hugged her daughter.
Lily wrapped both arms around her neck.
That was what Richard had never understood.
Power did not come from making everyone afraid to lose you.
Sometimes power came from finally realizing what remained when you walked away.
The next morning, Maya attended the emergency custody hearing.
Richard appeared by video with his attorney.
His new attorney.
He looked tired.
But still arrogant.
The judge reviewed the birthday footage.
Richard’s attorney argued the incident was isolated.
Then Claire Dawson introduced financial records showing Richard had been paid to surveil Maya before their relationship began.
The judge stopped the proceedings.
“Paid by whom?”
“An entity currently under federal investigation.”
Richard’s attorney objected.
The judge overruled.
Claire continued.
“Mr. Vance’s contact with my client appears to have originated not from a romantic relationship, but from a compensated surveillance assignment involving her missing mother.”
Richard’s face changed.
The judge stared at him through the screen.
“Mr. Vance, is that accurate?”
Richard’s attorney whispered urgently.
Richard answered anyway.
“No.”
Claire held up the contract.
“Then you are stating under oath that this signature is not yours?”
Richard looked at the document.
His lawyer closed his eyes.
Richard said, “I didn’t understand what the contract meant.”
Claire nodded.
“So it is your signature.”
The judge granted Maya temporary sole custody.
Richard received no unsupervised contact.
He was ordered not to approach Maya or Lily.
For the first time since the birthday party, Maya felt something resembling relief.
Not victory.
Relief.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
Maya used a private exit.
Julian was standing beside the car.
“You won.”
“Temporarily.”
“It matters.”
Maya looked at him.
“My mother survived Blackridge.”
“I know.”
“Did you know before yesterday?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Maya studied his face.
Then she handed him a photocopy of Daniel’s note.
Julian read it.
“Richard was paid to make sure you believed she didn’t.”
Maya nodded.
“What does that mean to you?”
Julian thought.
“He may have manipulated the investigation.”
“He was twenty-seven.”
“He could still provide false information.”
“What kind?”
“A witness statement. A sighting. Anything that pushed police toward voluntary disappearance.”
Maya suddenly remembered.
“There was a witness.”
Julian looked at her.
“A man told police he saw Mom board a train.”
“Do you remember his name?”
“No.”
Thomas, sitting in the front seat, turned.
“I can get the report.”
He had it within twenty minutes.
The witness was Richard Vance.
Maya stared at the old police file.
Richard had told investigators he saw Evelyn at the railway station the night she vanished.
He claimed she carried a suitcase.
He described her as calm.
He said she boarded a northbound train alone.
That testimony had helped shape the theory that Evelyn chose to disappear.
Maya whispered, “He lied.”
Julian said nothing.
“He knew she was alive after Blackridge.”
“Yes.”
“And then he made sure police searched in the wrong direction.”
“Yes.”
Maya’s hands trembled.
“What happened after the warehouse?”
Thomas’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then looked at Maya.
“Our team found Daniel.”
Maya stood.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“A hospital in Quebec.”
“Why is he there?”
May you like
Thomas’s face darkened.
“Someone shot him yesterday.”
