Chapter 14 - The Price of Julian’s Silence

Maya returned from Quebec furious.

Julian was waiting in the library of the Sterling safe residence.

She threw Daniel’s note onto the table.

“Who paid Richard after Olivia stopped?”

Julian looked at her.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“I don’t know.”

“Daniel told me to ask you.”

Julian’s expression changed.

Maya saw it.

“You do know.”

“I know a possibility.”

“Name it.”

Julian stood.

“Maya.”

“Name it.”

He looked toward the door.

Thomas quietly left.

Maya laughed bitterly.

“That bad?”

Julian walked toward the fireplace.

“My older brother.”

Maya froze.

“You have a brother?”

“Had.”

“What does had mean?”

“Gabriel died twelve years ago.”

“Then he didn’t pay Richard four years ago.”

“No.”

“Who used his accounts?”

Julian looked at her.

“My sister.”

Maya stared.

Nothing in the Ashbourne archives had mentioned a Sterling daughter.

“What sister?”

“Catherine.”

“Why have I never heard of her?”

“She left the family publicly at nineteen. Changed her name. Built companies through nominees.”

“Why?”

“Because my father wanted one child invisible.”

“Why?”

Julian’s voice became cold.

“To manage what could not be connected to Sterling.”

Maya sat slowly.

“And you knew?”

“I knew she existed.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I knew she handled private family matters. I did not know Blackridge continued under her.”

“Daniel thinks it did.”

“Yes.”

“Did my mother know Catherine?”

“I believe so.”

“You believe?”

Julian walked to a locked cabinet.

He removed a folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Evelyn.

Daniel.

A younger Julian.

And a blond woman Maya had never seen.

Catherine Sterling.

Maya looked at the date.

Eight years ago.

“You met my mother with Catherine.”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I wasn’t certain Catherine was involved in Eleanor’s disappearance.”

“You decided that for me.”

“Yes.”

Maya stood.

“That is exactly what every person in this story keeps doing.”

Julian did not argue.

“My mother decided I couldn’t know who she was.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel decided I couldn’t know she survived.”

“Yes.”

“Richard decided I didn’t deserve control of my own money, my own friends, my own child.”

Julian lowered his eyes.

“And you decided I couldn’t know your sister might be connected to all of it.”

“Yes.”

Maya’s voice shook.

“You are not different because you wear a better suit.”

Julian accepted the sentence like a blow.

“No.”

Maya moved toward the door.

He spoke.

“I can tell you why I did it.”

“I know why.”

She turned.

“You thought you were protecting me.”

“Yes.”

“That excuse has ruined my entire life.”

Julian said nothing.

Maya left.

That evening, she made a decision.

She stopped staying in Sterling property.

Claire arranged a secure apartment through an independent victim-services organization.

Maya transferred Lily there.

She changed attorneys for the corporate investigation so no Sterling firm had access.

She gave federal investigators a formal statement about Julian withholding Catherine’s identity.

She did not answer Julian’s calls.

For four days, he did not send Thomas.

Did not send flowers.

Did not send messages.

On the fifth day, Maya received a package.

No return address.

Inside was an old cassette tape.

A note read:

Your mother wanted you to hear this when you became free of Richard.

Maya’s hands shook.

She checked the package with security before playing it.

Evelyn’s voice filled the apartment.

“Maya.”

Maya covered her mouth.

“I don’t know when you will hear this.”

Static.

“I have made terrible mistakes because I confused secrecy with protection.”

Maya began crying.

“If Richard is gone from your life, then you did something I was unable to do for many years.”

A breath.

“You chose yourself.”

Lily came into the room.

“Mommy?”

Maya pulled her onto the couch.

Evelyn continued.

“There is something I need you to understand about Julian Sterling.”

Maya stopped.

“He is not his father.”

Another pause.

“But that does not mean you should trust him without question.”

Maya almost laughed through her tears.

“That family has been trained to carry secrets like inheritance.”

Evelyn’s voice became softer.

“If Julian ever gives you the truth only after you discover the lie, make him earn the next conversation.”

Maya looked down.

Her mother had known him better than she did.

The tape continued.

“And if Catherine Sterling is still alive, do not let her know you have the second key.”

Maya sat perfectly still.

She touched the ring.

The second key.

Daniel had used the same phrase.

Evelyn continued.

“The first key opens the history.”

“The second opens the names of everyone still active.”

Maya’s breath stopped.

“And one of those names will hurt you more than Richard ever could.”

May you like

The tape clicked.

End.
