Chapter 11 - The Basement Where Maya Remembered Everything

Maya had been inside Blackridge before.
The realization came when she saw the staircase.
She was allowed onto the property three days after the federal search began because investigators needed her to identify several personal objects recovered from the sealed archive.
Julian accompanied her only to the outer hallway.
Maya walked downstairs with Rachel.
Concrete walls.
Metal railing.
Fluorescent lights.
Then she smelled something.
Cedar.
Dust.
Bleach.
Her knees weakened.
Rachel caught her elbow.
“Maya?”
“I know this place.”
Rachel stopped.
“What?”
“I’ve been here.”
“When?”
“I don’t know.”
Maya looked down the corridor.
A memory flashed.
Her mother holding her hand.
Maya was small.
Maybe six.
A man gave her orange soda.
Someone shouted behind a door.
Evelyn covered Maya’s ears.
Maya whispered, “I was here as a child.”
Rachel immediately called another investigator.
They moved slowly.
At the end of the corridor was an old office.
Inside, agents had found a child’s drawing wedged behind a filing cabinet.
A house.
A tree.
Three stick figures.
The name MAYA written in purple crayon.
Maya stared at it.
Her entire body began shaking.
“That’s mine.”
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
She remembered the crayon.
Her mother always carried broken crayons inside a tin because restaurants never had enough colors.
Rachel photographed Maya beside the drawing.
“Why would Eleanor bring you here?”
Maya closed her eyes.
More fragments surfaced.
A man with blond hair.
Daniel.
A woman yelling.
Olivia.
Her mother saying, “Stay under the desk.”
Maya suddenly looked toward the far wall.
“There was another door.”
Rachel frowned.
“What?”
“Behind that shelf.”
“There isn’t.”
“There was.”
Agents moved the shelving unit.
Behind it was concrete.
Maya touched the wall.
“No.”
She remembered being carried through darkness.
A narrow passage.
Cold air.
Her mother crying.
“There was a door.”
The agents scanned the wall.
Forty minutes later, they found metal behind the concrete.
A sealed doorway.
The wall had been built after Maya’s childhood visit.
By evening, a controlled team opened it.
The passage beyond descended farther underground.
There were no modern records of it.
At the bottom was a room.
Smaller than the others.
Inside were old computers, filing cabinets and a single heavy desk.
On the wall was the Ashbourne emblem.
ASH.
Maya removed the ring.
The engraving matched perfectly.
Thomas, watching from the doorway, whispered, “Cipher.”
Maya examined the three letters.
ASH.
Her mother had said they were not initials.
A cipher.
On the desk were three rotating metal wheels marked with letters and numbers.
Maya inserted the ring into a circular indentation.
It fit.
The mechanism clicked.
The wheels unlocked.
Rachel looked at Maya.
“Do you know the code?”
“No.”
Maya thought of the number engraved beneath ASH.
18-47.
The same number from Richard’s contract.
She entered it.
Nothing.
Thomas said, “Maybe it’s not eighteen forty-seven.”
Maya looked at the letters.
A.
S.
H.
Alphabet positions.
1.
2.
3.
She entered 1-19-8.
A hidden drawer opened.
Inside was a ledger.
Black leather.
No title.
Maya touched it.
The Blackridge ledger.
Evelyn had hidden it decades earlier.
Or someone had.
Rachel opened the first pages.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Codes.
Then Maya noticed an envelope beneath the ledger.
Her name was written on it.
Not in Evelyn’s handwriting.
In Daniel Mercer’s.
Maya opened it.
One sentence.
Eleanor survived Blackridge.
Maya stopped breathing.
