Chapter 9 - Colonel Whitmore’s Command

Six months after Hope’s birth, Anna stood before hundreds of service members inside a military auditorium.
She wore her formal uniform.
Her medals were arranged precisely across her chest, and her colonel’s insignia gleamed beneath the lights. Major Brooks stood in the front row.
General Hayes approached the podium.
“Colonel Anna Whitmore has spent her career ensuring that medical teams can communicate when systems fail, environments collapse and lives depend on seconds,” he said. “Today, she assumes command of the Joint Medical Communications Group.”
The audience rose in applause.
Anna stepped forward and accepted the command flag.
Hope watched from Major Brooks’s arms, wearing a small blue dress and noise-protective headphones.
Mark stood at the back of the auditorium.
Anna had not invited him as her husband.
She had invited him as Hope’s father.
After the ceremony, he approached carefully.
“Congratulations, Colonel.”
“Thank you.”
He looked toward the officers waiting to speak with her.
“I understand now why you couldn’t tell me everything.”
Anna shook her head.
“Classification was not the reason our marriage failed.”
“I know.”
“The problem was that you decided anything you didn’t understand could not be important.”
Mark nodded.
“I’ve been working with a counselor.”
“That is good.”
“I found a job.”
Anna raised an eyebrow.
“Entry-level project coordinator,” he said. “No private office. No driver. My manager is twenty-seven.”
A small smile touched Anna’s face.
“How are you handling that?”
“Badly at first.”
“And now?”
“I listen before speaking.”
“That must be difficult.”
“I deserved that.”
Hope reached toward him from Elena’s arms.
Mark smiled and lifted her.
Anna observed the gentleness in his movements.
He was not restored.
He was not forgiven.

But he was learning.
For Hope’s sake, Anna hoped the lesson would last.
