Chapter 2 - The Twenty-Million-Dollar Opportunity

Whitmore Strategic Solutions received its greatest opportunity during Anna’s pregnancy.
A private defense consortium offered Mark a twenty-million-dollar contract to develop a secure communication platform for emergency medical teams.
Mark was thrilled.
He believed the deal would make him famous.
What he did not know was that the consortium had chosen his company because of Anna.
Years earlier, Anna had developed the field requirements for the type of system the consortium wanted. She had not influenced the selection process, but her anonymous trust investment had allowed Mark’s company to develop the necessary technology.
The contract came with strict rules.
The company could not transfer money to unapproved accounts. It could not share designs with outside partners. It could not claim military endorsement before final testing.
Mark signed every document without reading most of them.
Vanessa Hale joined the company two months later as director of corporate partnerships.
She was confident, flattering and ambitious. She told Mark everything he wanted to hear.
“You built this company from nothing.”
“You deserve someone who understands your vision.”
“Anna should be proud to stand behind you.”
Mark liked the phrase stand behind you.
Anna had never stood behind him.
She had always stood beside him.
As Anna’s pregnancy advanced, Mark began spending more evenings with Vanessa. He claimed they were preparing investor presentations, but their meetings moved from the office to restaurants, then from restaurants to hotels.
Anna noticed the changes.
The unfamiliar perfume.
The phone turned face down.
The unexplained charges.
She did not confront him immediately. Her military training had taught her that accusations without evidence gave dishonest people time to hide the truth.
Instead, she observed.
Major Elena Brooks, Anna’s closest friend and executive officer, urged her to protect herself.
“You are about to become a mother,” Elena said. “You cannot keep pretending you don’t see what he’s doing.”
“I see it,” Anna replied.
“Then why are you waiting?”
Anna looked down at the tiny pair of baby socks in her hands.
“Because I need to know whether he is only betraying me or whether he is betraying everyone who trusted his company.”

The answer arrived three weeks later.
It was worse than she feared.
