Chapter 8 - The Cost of Arrogance
The investigation lasted four months.
Mark avoided prison because the final transfer had been stopped, he cooperated with investigators and no restricted designs were successfully delivered. However, the consequences were severe.
He lost his position as chief executive.
His company’s board activated the recovery clause attached to Anna’s original trust investment. The business was reorganized under independent management, with profits directed toward completing the military medical communications project.
The penthouse and luxury vehicle were sold.
The engagement ring was surrendered.
Most of the diverted money was recovered, though legal fees, penalties and damaged contracts cost Mark nearly everything he owned.
Vanessa accepted an agreement requiring her to testify, return the assets and permanently withdraw from defense contracting. Her professional reputation collapsed after the financial records became public in court.
She never married Mark.
She stopped answering his calls before the investigation ended.
Mark moved into a small rented apartment outside the city.
For the first time in years, no assistants managed his schedule. No driver waited downstairs. No investors laughed at his jokes.
He attended supervised visits with Hope twice a week.
During the first visit, he stood awkwardly beside the crib.
Anna watched from across the room.
“You can pick her up,” she said.
“What if I do it wrong?”
“Support her head.”
Mark lifted his daughter carefully.
Hope opened her eyes and wrapped her tiny fingers around one of his.
Mark’s face changed.
“She knows me.”
“She knows your voice,” Anna said. “I spoke about you before she was born.”
The words hurt him more than anger would have.
Anna had prepared their daughter to love him even while he was preparing to leave them.
“I don’t deserve that,” he said.
“No,” Anna replied. “But Hope deserves the chance to know whether you can become better.”
Mark looked down at the baby.
For once, he did not defend himself.
He did not blame Vanessa, the investors or Anna’s silence.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Anna heard him.
But she did not tell him it was enough.
