Chapter 5 - The Night Everything Broke

Anna went into labor two days early.
She was alone when the contractions began.
Mark had promised to remain nearby, but he was at the penthouse with Vanessa, celebrating what they believed would be the successful transfer of the final eight million dollars.
Anna called him once.
He declined the call.
She sent a message.
The baby is coming. I’m going to the hospital.
Mark read it ten minutes later.
Vanessa watched his face.
“Are you going?”
“I don’t know.”
“She has doctors.”
“She’s my wife.”
“Not for long.”
Mark placed the phone on the table.
Vanessa smiled and poured champagne.
Major Brooks arrived at Anna’s home fifteen minutes later after receiving an emergency alert from the security system. She drove Anna to the military medical center and stayed beside her through the first hours of labor.
General Hayes visited briefly, remaining outside the delivery area until Anna asked to see him.
“The command decision has been finalized,” he said. “The official envelope will arrive tomorrow.”
Anna gripped the bed railing through another contraction.
“Tomorrow may be complicated.”
“I can delay the announcement.”
“No. I’ve delayed enough things for other people.”
Her daughter was born shortly before sunrise.
She was healthy, peaceful and smaller than Anna had imagined.
When the nurse placed the baby against her chest, Anna cried quietly.
Not because Mark was absent.
Because, in that moment, she understood that she no longer needed him to become the family she had wanted.
She whispered her daughter’s name.
Hope Eleanor Whitmore.
Major Brooks stood nearby, wiping tears from her eyes.
“You chose Hope?”
“My grandfather used to say hope is not passive,” Anna said. “It’s a decision to believe the future can be better and then work to make it so.”
Her phone rang on the bedside table.
Mark.
Anna answered.
“Where are you?” he demanded.
“In the hospital.”
“You should have called again.”
“I called once. I sent a message.”
“I was busy.”
Anna looked down at her daughter.
“So was I.”
“I’ll come this afternoon. Vanessa will be with me.”
Anna understood immediately.
He was not coming to meet his child.
He was coming to make an announcement.
“Come whenever you’re ready,” she said.
May you like
Then she contacted the investigators.
“Move forward,” Anna told them. “He has made his decision.”
