SILENCE / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - THE FAMILY STATEMENT

By morning, the Ashfords had released a public statement.

Rachel learned about it when her phone began filling with messages from friends.

The statement appeared on the Ashford Foundation website and had already been sent to local news organizations.

During a private family celebration, a young child wandered briefly from her mother’s supervision and was discovered resting in a waste-storage area. The child received immediate medical attention and is expected to recover fully. Reports suggesting intentional harm by members of the Ashford family are false and deeply distressing.

Rachel read it twice.

Then a third time.

Resting in a waste-storage area.

As though Emma had chosen the trash can for a nap.

As though Rachel had failed to watch her.

As though Margaret’s recorded confession did not exist.

Amelia took the phone from Rachel.

“This was written by a crisis-management firm.”

“They blamed me.”

“They are creating an alternative narrative.”

“Can they do that?”

“They just did.”

Daniel entered the room carrying coffee.

Rachel held up the statement.

“Did you approve this?”

He looked at the screen.

“No.”

“Did you know it was being released?”

“My father mentioned the foundation would respond.”

“It says Emma wandered away from me.”

“That is technically what happened.”

Rachel stared at him.

“She was drugged.”

“The toxicology report is preliminary.”

“She said Margaret gave her the juice.”

“She also said a camera man put her in the trash.”

“Because he did.”

Daniel placed the coffee on the table.

“I am not saying she is lying.”

“You are saying everything except that.”

“I’m saying she is two years old and confused.”

Rachel moved between him and Emma’s bed.

“Do not talk about her like she is evidence your lawyer needs to weaken.”

“My lawyer?”

“You sent one hundred thousand dollars to North Vale Strategies.”

Daniel went still.

Amelia stepped closer.

“We preserved the account records.”

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“You searched my private account?”

“It appears your privacy mattered more to you than mine.”

“That payment has nothing to do with Aaron Pike.”

“What was it for?”

Daniel said nothing.

“What was it for?” Rachel repeated.

“A security consultant.”

“For what?”

Daniel looked toward Amelia.

“This is a private marital issue.”

“She is my attorney.”

His face changed.

“You hired a divorce lawyer?”

“I hired protection.”

“From me?”

“From your family.”

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“I did not pay Aaron.”

“Then show us the contract.”

“I cannot.”

“Why?”

“Because it is confidential.”

Amelia spoke calmly.

“If the transaction is unrelated to the investigation, disclosure may help remove suspicion.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“I am not discussing business with you.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“Business.”

“Rachel, I am trying to keep this family together.”

“There is no family together. There is Emma, and there are people who failed her.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“You made mistakes too.”

The room became silent.

“What mistake did I make?”

“You argued with me instead of watching her.”

Rachel felt the accusation like a slap.

Amelia stepped forward.

“This conversation is over.”

Daniel ignored her.

“If you had not created a scene on the dance floor, Emma would not have walked away.”

“She was taken.”

“You put her down.”

“You were standing there.”

“You were holding her before that.”

Rachel’s breathing changed.

Daniel saw it.

For a second, regret crossed his face.

But he continued.

“The police will examine every decision.”

“So will a judge,” Rachel said.

Daniel went pale.

“You are going to try to take her from me?”

“No. I am going to stop your family from taking her from me.”

“You think a court will ignore that she disappeared from your supervision?”

“She disappeared during an event on your parents’ property after your mother drugged her.”

“Allegedly.”

Rachel stared at him.

That single word ended something.

She walked to the door and opened it.

“Leave.”

“Rachel.”

“My daughter needs silence.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

Then at Rachel.

He picked up his coffee and walked out.

Two minutes later, Detective Torres called.

They had found Aaron Pike.

He was alive.

He had been discovered inside a motel room sixty miles from the estate.

But before police reached him, he had destroyed his phone, burned several documents in the sink, and swallowed an unknown quantity of pills.

He was now unconscious in intensive care.

“Did he say anything?” Rachel asked.

“One sentence to the motel manager.”

May you like

“What sentence?”

“He said, ‘The grandmother was never the client.’”
