SILENCE / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN AT THE GATE

Margaret Ashford was arrested two days later.

The charges included child endangerment, conspiracy, obstruction, and evidence tampering.

Charles was arrested for financing unlawful surveillance and interfering with the original investigation into Claire’s disappearance.

Two North Vale employees were charged in connection with the hotel fire.

Daniel was not arrested.

Not yet.

His attorneys claimed he had signed documents without knowledge of their illegal purpose. They insisted his payment to North Vale was intended only to prepare for a custody dispute.

But Detective Torres obtained his phone.

The device had been professionally wiped.

Technicians recovered fragments of messages.

One message had been sent during the engagement party.

SILENCE.

It came from Daniel’s account.

Daniel claimed someone else had used his phone.

Rachel did not believe him.

She also did not know whether the command had saved Emma from being taken or abandoned her in the trash can.

Both possibilities kept her awake.

Three weeks after the party, Rachel and Emma moved into a protected residence.

The court suspended Daniel’s visitation pending further investigation.

Emma began seeing a trauma specialist unaffiliated with the Ashford Foundation.

She slowly stopped crying whenever she saw a green container.

She still refused apple juice.

Every night, Rachel slept beside her.

Vanessa reopened Claire’s missing-person case.

The cassette recording passed forensic verification. Claire had been alive after her reported disappearance.

Authorities began searching records connected to Simon Vale.

But Simon Vale vanished before police reached his home.

His office had been emptied.

His computer servers were destroyed.

His passport showed no recent travel.

It was as though someone had prepared his disappearance years in advance.

Lily postponed her wedding.

Oliver remained beside her despite pressure from both families.

The Ashford Foundation board removed Margaret and Charles from leadership, but millions of dollars remained unaccounted for.

Some payments led to private clinics.

Others led to international adoption agencies that no longer existed.

Several led to children’s charities connected to Simon Vale.

Rachel tried not to imagine what those charities had really been doing.

One rainy evening, Detective Torres arrived at the protected residence carrying a sealed folder.

Emma was asleep upstairs.

Rachel and Vanessa sat with the detective at the dining table.

“We received genetic results,” Torres said.

Rachel’s stomach tightened.

“From what?”

“The hair found inside the yellow coat in Claire’s evidence box.”

Vanessa gripped the edge of the table.

“You found her coat?”

“It was stored under the wrong case number.”

“Was the hair Claire’s?”

“We compared it to Vanessa’s DNA. It belonged to her daughter.”

Vanessa began crying.

Rachel reached for her hand.

Detective Torres opened the folder.

“We also compared the sample to Emma.”

Rachel stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because of Aaron’s statement concerning a genetic marker.”

“What did you find?”

“Claire and Emma share a rare inherited sequence.”

Rachel’s mouth went dry.

“They are related?”

“Yes.”

“How closely?”

“The laboratory cannot confirm the exact relationship without additional samples.”

Vanessa looked at Rachel.

“Emma could be my granddaughter?”

Rachel’s heart pounded.

“That is impossible.”

“Why?” Detective Torres asked.

“Because Daniel is her father. The paternity test confirmed it.”

“Do you have the original laboratory report?”

“Daniel said Margaret ordered the test.”

“Did you ever see it?”

Rachel realized she had not.

Detective Torres continued.

“We obtained Daniel’s DNA through a warrant.”

Rachel held her breath.

“He is Emma’s biological father.”

Relief and confusion collided.

“Then how is Emma related to Claire?”

“That is what we are trying to determine.”

“Could Claire be related to Daniel?”

“Claire was his cousin.”

“That would explain some shared DNA.”

“Not this amount.”

Vanessa went still.

“What are you saying?”

Detective Torres placed another document on the table.

“Daniel and Claire were not biological cousins.”

Rachel stared at the page.

“Whose child was Daniel?”

“We do not know yet.”

Vanessa looked horrified.

“Margaret gave birth to him.”

“Officially.”

The detective removed an old hospital photograph from the folder.

Margaret stood beside a maternity bed holding a newborn wrapped in blue.

On the back was a date.

Six months before Daniel’s official birthday.

Rachel read it twice.

“That cannot be him.”

“We believe the infant in this photograph may be another child.”

“What child?”

“A boy named Samuel Reed who disappeared from St. Catherine’s maternity ward thirty-four years ago.”

Rachel remembered Aaron’s warning.

Do not say Simon Vale’s name in this hospital.

“Was Daniel taken from the hospital?”

“We do not know.”

“Does Daniel know?”

“We do not know that either.”

The doorbell rang.

Everyone froze.

No visitor knew the address.

Detective Torres reached for her weapon.

The security officer outside spoke through the intercom.

“Detective, there is a woman at the main gate.”

“Name?”

“She refuses to give one.”

“Description?”

“Approximately thirty-two years old. Dark hair. Yellow raincoat.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

The security officer continued.

“She says she is here for Emma.”

Rachel stood.

Detective Torres moved toward the monitor near the door.

The screen showed the property’s front gate.

A woman stood beneath the rain.

Her face was partly hidden beneath the hood of a yellow coat.

In one hand, she held an old stuffed rabbit.

It looked almost identical to Emma’s.

The woman slowly lifted her face toward the camera.

A faded reddish birthmark covered the left side of her cheek.

Vanessa collapsed into the chair.

“Claire.”

Rachel stared at the screen.

“That woman is too young.”

The woman at the gate pressed the intercom button.

Her voice filled the room.

“My name is not Claire.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“My mother was Claire Ashford.”

Vanessa began sobbing.

Rachel gripped the table.

The woman continued.

“Simon Vale took my mother when she was six years old. She escaped him eleven days ago.”

Detective Torres pressed the intercom.

“Where is Claire now?”

The woman’s expression changed.

“She sent me here before they found us.”

“Who found you?”

The lights inside the residence went out.

The security monitor flickered.

The woman at the gate turned sharply toward the road.

Headlights appeared behind her.

Three black vehicles stopped outside the property.

The security officer shouted through the intercom.

“Lock down the house!”

Rachel ran toward the stairs.

“Emma!”

A crash sounded from the second floor.

Glass shattered.

Rachel reached the landing and saw Emma’s bedroom door standing open.

The curtains moved in the rain.

The bed was empty.

On the pillow lay Emma’s stuffed rabbit.

A small white card had been pinned to its chest.

Rachel pulled it free.

Only one word had been printed on the front.

SILENCE.

On the back, someone had written a message by hand.

The first transfer failed.

The second will not.

From outside the house came the sound of Vanessa screaming Claire’s name.

Rachel ran to the broken window and looked down.

The black vehicles were gone.

The woman in the yellow coat had disappeared.

And across the wet lawn, moving toward the forest, Rachel saw a man carrying a small child wrapped in a pink floral blanket.

The man looked back once.

May you like

Even through the darkness, Rachel recognized him.

Daniel.
