Chapter 5 - NOBODY LEAVES

The paramedics worked on Emma beneath the party lights.

Rachel knelt beside them, answering questions through tears.

“How long was she inside?”

“I don’t know. She was missing for eleven minutes.”

“Was the lid closed?”

“Almost.”

“Was there anything around her mouth?”

“The blanket.”

One paramedic placed an oxygen mask over Emma’s face.

Another checked her pulse.

“She has a heartbeat.”

Rachel nearly collapsed.

“Is she breathing?”

“Shallowly.”

“Will she be all right?”

“We need to transport her now.”

They lifted Emma onto a stretcher.

Rachel climbed into the ambulance beside her.

A police officer stopped Daniel when he tried to follow.

“Only one parent.”

“I’m her father.”

Rachel looked at him from inside the ambulance.

“You stayed for the announcement.”

His face tightened.

The doors closed.

As the ambulance moved down the driveway, Rachel saw officers separating guests across the lawn.

Margaret stood beneath the rose arch speaking calmly to a detective.

Charles sat in a chair with both hands over his face.

Vanessa cried near the hedge.

Lily leaned against Oliver.

No one looked happy anymore.

At St. Catherine’s Hospital, doctors rushed Emma into the pediatric emergency department.

Rachel stood outside the treatment room wearing a borrowed hospital gown over her party dress. Her bare feet were dirty from the lawn. Someone had cleaned a cut on her heel, but she barely felt it.

Daniel arrived thirty minutes later.

He approached carefully.

“How is she?”

“They are running scans.”

“Has she woken up?”

“No.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Rachel watched him struggle with emotion.

For years, she had rushed to comfort him whenever he looked hurt.

This time, she did not move.

A detective entered the hallway.

She introduced herself as Detective Maya Torres.

“We need to ask both of you some questions.”

Rachel nodded.

Daniel looked toward the treatment room.

“Can this wait?”

“No,” Detective Torres said. “A child was concealed inside a closed waste container. We are treating the property as a crime scene.”

Daniel flinched at the word crime.

The detective opened a notebook.

“Mrs. Bennett, when did you last see Emma before finding her?”

Rachel explained the dance floor, the argument, and the missing minutes.

“Who were you arguing with?”

“My husband.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Detective Torres turned toward him.

“What was the argument about?”

“A family issue.”

“What kind of family issue?”

Rachel answered.

“His mother hired a private investigator to follow me because she wants custody of Emma.”

Daniel looked at her.

“That is not what I said.”

“It is exactly what you said.”

“I said Mother believes Emma needs stability.”

Detective Torres wrote something down.

“Was your mother aware Mrs. Bennett intended to leave the party?”

“Yes,” Daniel admitted.

“Did she object?”

“She did not want a scene.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“She got one.”

Detective Torres continued.

“Who had physical contact with Emma during the hour before she disappeared?”

Rachel listed herself, Daniel, and Margaret.

“Anyone else?”

“The activity attendants. Possibly family members near the dance floor.”

“What about Vanessa Ashford?”

“She spoke to me but did not touch Emma.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“My aunt spoke to you?”

“Yes.”

“About what?”

Rachel did not answer him.

She looked at Detective Torres.

“She warned me not to leave Emma alone with Margaret.”

The detective’s pen stopped.

“Why?”

“She said she had failed to help someone years ago.”

Daniel frowned.

“That sounds like Vanessa being dramatic.”

Rachel turned toward him.

“Your daughter was found in a trash can.”

“I know.”

“Then stop protecting the people who put her there.”

“I’m not protecting anyone.”

“You called your mother before coming here.”

Daniel’s eyes shifted.

Rachel had seen him outside the ambulance, phone against his ear.

“What did she tell you?” Rachel asked.

“That the police misunderstood her comment.”

“She said they wanted Emma out of the family photograph.”

“She meant earlier, when she asked you to remove the toy.”

Rachel stared at him.

Even now.

Even with Emma unconscious behind a hospital door.

Daniel still searched for the least terrible explanation.

Detective Torres addressed him.

“Your mother’s exact statement was recorded by emergency services.”

Daniel’s face paled.

“What statement?”

The detective read from her notes.

“We only wanted her out of the family photograph.”

Daniel said nothing.

“Your aunt then said Mrs. Ashford instructed family members to hide the child.”

“She was upset.”

“Who?”

“Vanessa.”

Detective Torres closed her notebook.

“We have detained Margaret Ashford for questioning.”

Daniel stepped back.

“You arrested my mother?”

“I said detained.”

“This is a misunderstanding.”

“Then it should be easy to resolve.”

A doctor entered the hallway.

“Emma Bennett’s parents?”

Rachel stood instantly.

“I’m her mother.”

“I’m Dr. Priya Shah. Emma is stable.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

The doctor continued.

“She regained spontaneous breathing. Her scans show no major head injury, but we found evidence of a sedative in her bloodstream.”

The hallway became completely silent.

Daniel stared at the doctor.

“A sedative?”

“Yes.”

Rachel felt the walls closing around her.

“What kind?”

“We are still confirming the substance, but it appears consistent with a prescription anti-anxiety medication.”

“Could she have swallowed it by accident?”

“The amount in her system would be unusual for accidental contact.”

Detective Torres stepped closer.

“Doctor, can you determine when she was given the medication?”

“Based on absorption, likely thirty to ninety minutes before she arrived.”

Rachel remembered Emma’s bread at dinner.

The juice placed beside her chair.

The activity table.

Someone had drugged her child before hiding her.

“Who has that medication?” Rachel whispered.

May you like

Daniel slowly looked at her.

“My father.”
