Chapter 5 - The Key)

Daniel locked the bedroom door.
Margaret pulled Lily into the bathroom.
Claire stood frozen beside the bed.
The unknown man downstairs moved slowly through the house.
A floorboard creaked.
Then another.
Daniel whispered, "Call the police."
Claire grabbed her phone.
No signal.
She held it toward the window.
One bar appeared and vanished.
Daniel checked his.
"Nothing."
The man below called again.
"You don't understand what you're involved in."
Daniel looked around the room.
The old house had only one exit from the second floor.
The staircase.
Unless they used the window.
Claire crossed to it.
The drop was nearly fifteen feet.
Below was a sloping section of roof above the kitchen.
Daniel saw what she was thinking.
"Lily first."
Claire nodded.
He entered the bathroom.
"We're going out the window."
Margaret looked terrified.
"I can't climb."
"You won't have to. The roof slopes to the porch."
The footsteps reached the bottom of the stairs.
Daniel moved quickly.
He climbed through the window and stepped onto the roof.
Claire handed Lily to him.
The child did not cry.
That frightened Claire.
Lily had gone beyond fear into absolute silence.
Daniel helped her down toward the porch roof.
Margaret followed.
Claire was last.
As she climbed through the window, the bedroom door shook.
The man kicked it once.
Then again.
Claire crawled across the roof.
The door splintered behind her.
She did not look back.
Daniel lowered Lily onto the grass.
Margaret jumped the final three feet.
Claire reached the edge.
A hand grabbed her ankle.
She screamed.
She looked back.
A man in a dark jacket had leaned out the upstairs window.
She did not recognize him.
He pulled.
Claire kicked wildly.
Daniel climbed back onto the porch roof.
"Let her go!"
The man reached for Claire's other leg.
Daniel struck his arm.
The grip loosened.
Claire slid down the roof and fell into Daniel.
They hit the grass together.
"Run!"
They sprinted toward the car.
The man came out the front door seconds later.
Daniel started the engine.
Gravel exploded beneath the tires.
Claire looked back.
The man stood in the driveway.
He did not chase them.
He simply lifted a phone.
Then Daniel's own phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
"Dad."
Claire stared at him.
"Answer."
Daniel did.
Marcus Reed spoke before Daniel could say anything.
"Where are you?"
Daniel's eyes met Claire's.
"Why?"
"Because something has happened at Whitmore Hall."
"What?"
"Richard collapsed."
Claire's anger briefly gave way to fear.
"My father?"
Marcus continued.
"He was found in his study. He may have had a heart attack."
Claire looked toward the road.
"Turn around."
Daniel hesitated.
"Claire."
"Turn around."
They drove back toward Whitmore Hall.
During the trip, Margaret called the Bellwater police and reported the break-in.
Claire did not mention the deposit box.
Not yet.
She no longer knew whom to trust.
Richard was alive when they arrived at the mansion.
An ambulance stood outside.
Guests had finally left.
The wedding flowers remained.
White petals covered sections of the marble floor where staff had begun dismantling arrangements.
Claire reached Richard's study.
He sat in a chair with a paramedic beside him.
He looked exhausted.
But conscious.
"Claire."
She stopped in the doorway.
"You knew Bellwater was dangerous."
Richard looked away.
"Yes."
"Someone tried to take the key."
His head snapped up.
"What key?"
Claire watched him carefully.
He genuinely did not seem to know.
"The key hidden inside Mom's locket."
Richard's face lost color.
"What does it open?"
"A deposit box."
"Where?"
She did not answer.
He stood despite the paramedic's protest.
"Claire, listen to me. Do not go to that box."
"Why?"
"Because whoever is watching may already know about it."
"Who is watching?"
"I don't know anymore."
She laughed bitterly.
"Convenient."
Richard grabbed the desk.
"You think I'm the villain because I lied to you."
"You committed my mother."
"Yes."
The direct answer surprised her.
Richard closed his eyes.
"I signed the papers."
Claire could not speak.
"I believed she was having a breakdown."
"She discovered stolen money."
"I didn't know that at first."
"Marcus knew."
Richard looked toward the door.
Daniel stood behind Claire.
Richard's voice lowered.
"Marcus knew more than I did."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"My father said you asked him for help."
"I did."
"Did he arrange my mother's disappearance?"
Richard looked at him.
"He arranged the doctors."
"Did he tell you she died?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Six months after she was taken."
"Did you believe him?"
Richard hesitated.
Claire saw the answer.
"No," she said.
Richard looked at her.
"You didn't believe him."
"I wanted to."
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"You wanted her dead."
"No."
"You wanted the problem gone."
Richard's face twisted.
"I was thirty-nine. The company was collapsing. Your mother accused half the board of stealing. Marcus told me she was delusional. Every doctor agreed."
"Doctors he hired."
"I know that now."
Claire stepped closer.
"When did you know she was alive?"
Richard's shoulders dropped.
"Eleven years ago."
The room went silent.
Claire whispered, "What?"
"I received a letter."
"From her?"
"Yes."
"You knew for eleven years."
"I tried to find her."
"Did you?"
"Not then."
"Later?"
Richard looked at the floor.
"Three years ago."
Claire could barely stand.
"Where?"
"St. Orison."
Daniel asked, "What is St. Orison?"
Richard answered quietly.
"A private residential institution in Maine."
Claire remembered the tape.
Her mother had said the same name.
"What did you do when you found her?"
Richard's voice broke.
"She wouldn't come with me."
"Why?"
"She was afraid of me."
Claire stared at him.
Richard's eyes filled.
"She screamed when she saw me."
For the first time that day, Claire saw something inside him that looked like punishment.
Not legal punishment.
Not public shame.
Something deeper.
The understanding that the woman he had loved once viewed him as part of her nightmare.
"I left," he said.
Claire's anger sharpened again.
"You left her there?"
"I came back the next morning with another doctor."
"And?"
"She was gone."
"Transferred?"
"I was told she had been released."
"By whom?"
Richard looked toward Daniel.
"Marcus."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Claire took the brass key from her pocket.
Richard stared at it.
"This ends now."
"Claire."
"No more secrets."
She turned to Daniel.
"We're going to the bank tomorrow morning."
Daniel nodded.
His phone buzzed.
A message.
He looked at it.
Then his face changed.
Claire noticed.
"What?"
Daniel turned the phone toward her.
Unknown number.
May you like
One sentence.
If Claire opens Box 614, Daniel learns what his father really did.
