Chapter 15 - The Second Locket)

Claire woke at 3:17 in the morning.
Her phone was vibrating on the bedside table.
Daniel slept beside her.
For several seconds, Claire stared at the screen.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Then she remembered the hidden note.
For my daughters.
Her heart began beating faster.
She quietly got out of bed and walked into the cottage living room.
The phone stopped.
A voicemail appeared.
Claire stared at it.
She pressed play.
At first there was only breathing.
A young woman's breathing.
Fast.
Afraid.
Then a voice whispered.
"Claire?"
Claire's hand tightened around the phone.
"My name is Sophie."
Silence.
"I think Evelyn Whitmore is my mother."
Claire stopped breathing.
The message continued.
"I have been trying to contact you for three months."
Claire sat down.
"But someone told me if I went near you before your wedding, Evelyn would disappear again."
Claire looked toward the bedroom.
Daniel was still asleep.
The voice trembled.
"I didn't believe them at first."
A sound came through the recording.
A car door.
Then footsteps.
Sophie whispered faster.
"I have records. I have photographs. I have something Anna Hale gave me."
Claire's heart jumped.
Anna knew Sophie.
"I was going to bring everything to you tonight."
A knock sounded on Sophie's car window in the recording.
Claire remembered nothing like this, but the sound made her skin crawl.
Sophie inhaled sharply.
Then whispered.
"There's a man here."
Claire stood.
Another knock.
Sophie said, "He has a locket."
Claire reached for her own.
The bronze metal felt suddenly cold.
Sophie continued.
"It looks like mine."
Claire whispered to the empty room.
"Yours?"
On the voicemail, the young woman began crying.
"My mother gave me one too."
Claire's knees weakened.
Then a man's voice sounded faintly in the background.
Too distant to understand.
Sophie whispered.
"He knows my name."
The recording became chaotic.
Movement.
A car engine starting.
Sophie breathing hard.
Then she said one sentence.
"If something happens to me, don't trust Michael Mercer."
Claire closed her eyes.
The voicemail should have ended there.
It did not.
There were four more seconds.
A man's voice.
Closer now.
Calm.
Almost amused.
"Wrong Mercer."
The message ended.
Claire stared at the phone.
She immediately called the number.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Daniel entered the room.
"Claire?"
She turned.
He saw her face.
"What happened?"
Claire handed him the phone.
He listened to the voicemail.
His expression changed.
"We call Ortiz."
Claire nodded.
Within twenty minutes, Detective Ortiz was awake and tracing the number.
The phone had last connected to a tower near Boston University.
Claire remembered the surveillance photograph.
The young woman crossing a college campus.
"She may be a student."
Ortiz began checking.
At 4:02, she called back.
The number belonged to Sophie Lane.
Nineteen years old.
Second-year biology student.
Claire's hands began shaking.
"Address?"
Ortiz gave it to her.
Police reached Sophie's apartment first.
Empty.
Her roommate had not seen her since the previous afternoon.
Claire and Daniel arrived shortly after sunrise.
Sophie's room looked ordinary.
Textbooks.
Coffee cups.
Photographs.
A small plant dying on the windowsill.
Then Claire saw the wall above the desk.
Photographs of Whitmore Hall.
Richard.
Marcus.
St. Orison.
Anna Hale.
Evelyn.
And Claire.
Dozens of photographs.
Some old.
Some recent.
Red string connected names and dates.
Daniel stared.
"She was investigating all of this."
Claire approached the desk.
At the center lay a picture of Evelyn taken inside St. Orison.
Beside her stood a newborn baby.
Someone had written on the bottom.
Elaine Ward and infant 4421.
Claire's eyes filled.
"That's her."
Daniel nodded.
"It has to be."
Detective Ortiz entered behind them.
"We found Sophie's car."
Claire spun around.
"Where?"
"Parking garage near the river."
"Was she there?"
"No."
Claire felt cold.
"Blood?"
"No."
"Signs of struggle?"
"One broken window."
Daniel asked, "Anything inside?"
Ortiz hesitated.
"A package."
"For Claire?"
"Yes."
They returned to the station.
The package was opened in a secured evidence room.
Inside was a bronze locket.
Claire's locket.
Except it was not hers.
Hers was still around her neck.
She placed them side by side.
Identical roses.
Identical oval shape.
Identical dent near the hinge.
Daniel whispered, "They were a pair."
Claire opened Sophie's locket.
Inside was no photograph.
Only a folded piece of paper.
She removed it carefully.
A list of names.
Six women.
Victoria Whitmore.
Evelyn Whitmore.
Anna Hale.
Marianne Mercer.
Sophie Lane.
Claire Reed.
Claire stared at her new married name.
"Why am I on this?"
Ortiz took the paper.
Beside each name was a date.
Victoria.
1987.
Evelyn.
2006.
Anna.
2026.
Marianne.
2026.
Sophie.
2026.
Claire's line had no date.
Only a blank space.
Daniel's voice hardened.
"It's a target list."
Ortiz said nothing.
Claire looked at Marianne's name.
"She turned herself in."
Ortiz immediately called the detention facility where Marianne had been held for questioning.
No answer at first.
Then an officer called back.
Marianne Mercer had been released the previous evening.
"Released?" Claire said.
"On whose authority?"
Ortiz listened.
Her face changed.
"What?"
Daniel asked.
Ortiz ended the call.
"Federal authorization."
"From who?"
"They're checking."
Claire stared at the list again.
"Maybe Marianne wasn't hiding from us."
Daniel looked at her.
"Maybe she was hiding from whoever wrote this."
Ortiz's phone rang again.
She answered.
Then she slowly sat down.
"What happened?"
Claire asked.
Ortiz looked at them.
"The authorization that released Marianne came from a federal judge."
"Who?"
Ortiz turned her computer screen.
A name appeared.
Judge Caroline Mercer.
Claire frowned.
"Another Mercer?"
Ortiz searched the family records.
Then stopped.
Rachel's grandfather Henry Mercer had three children.
Stephen.
Marianne.
And Michael.
But one sealed adoption record listed a fourth child.
Caroline.
Claire stared.
"Rachel has an aunt no one mentioned."
Daniel read the record.
"Why was she adopted out?"
Ortiz continued scrolling.
"Because Henry Mercer wasn't listed as her father originally."
"Who was?"
Ortiz stopped.
Her face went pale.
Claire saw the name.
Charles Whitmore.
Her grandfather.
Claire whispered, "Caroline Mercer is a Whitmore."
A half-sister to Richard.
An aunt Claire had never known existed.
A federal judge.
Someone with access.
Authority.
Connections.
And perhaps the power to erase records long after the original conspiracy should have died.
Claire remembered the man's voice on Sophie's voicemail.
Wrong Mercer.
"Find Caroline," Claire said.
Ortiz was already typing.
Caroline's official residence was empty.
Her chambers reported she had taken emergency personal leave.
Destination unknown.
But her assistant provided one final detail.
Caroline had requested a government vehicle the previous afternoon.
The destination listed on the transportation request was Bellwater.
Claire's skin prickled.
"The wedding."
Daniel looked at her.
"She was there."
Ortiz checked traffic cameras.
One image showed a black sedan approaching the road near Claire's ceremony.
Another showed the same vehicle leaving just after midnight.
Inside sat a woman.
Gray hair.
Dark glasses.
Beside her was someone younger.
Claire leaned closer.
The younger passenger's face was partially visible.
Sophie.
"She's alive."
Daniel exhaled.
Claire's relief lasted only one second.
Then Ortiz enlarged the image.
Sophie was not restrained.
She was not struggling.
She was looking directly at Caroline.
And smiling.
Claire stared at the screen.
"What?"
Daniel whispered.
"Maybe she went willingly."
Claire thought about the voicemail.
The fear sounded real.
Unless Sophie had been afraid of someone else.
Another camera caught the vehicle twenty minutes later.
A third passenger appeared in the back seat.
A man.
Ortiz sharpened the image.
Daniel went still.
Claire looked at him.
"You know him."
Daniel did not answer.
"Daniel."
His face had lost all color.
"That's impossible."
"Who is he?"
Daniel stepped back from the screen.
Claire grabbed his arm.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at her.
"My grandfather."
Claire stared.
"Arthur Reed?"
Daniel nodded.
Claire turned toward the photograph.
Arthur Reed had supposedly died twelve years ago.
Daniel had attended his funeral.
Just as Claire had attended Evelyn's.
Another funeral.
Another closed coffin.
Another body no family member had been allowed to see.
Claire felt the room tilt.
Detective Ortiz whispered, "If Arthur Reed is alive..."
Claire finished.
"Then the people we thought inherited this system may have been taking orders from the same man all along."
Daniel stared at the screen.
His grandfather sat in the back of the sedan.
Older.
Thin.
But unmistakably alive.
Then Claire noticed something in Arthur's hand.
A red leather notebook.
The real Red Ledger.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Sophie sitting at a table.
Alive.
Beside her sat Caroline Mercer.
Behind them stood Arthur Reed.
On the table between them were both bronze lockets.
And the Red Ledger.
A message followed.
You found your mother.
Now decide whether you really want to find your sister.
Claire's hands trembled.
Another message appeared.
Bring Evelyn to Whitmore Hall tomorrow at noon.
Come without police.
Claire stared at the words.
Daniel read over her shoulder.
"No."
Claire did not respond.
A final photograph arrived.
Richard Whitmore sat in his study.
Unconscious.
A man stood behind his chair.
Holding a gun.
Claire stopped breathing.
Then came the final message.
The first wedding was interrupted.
The second wedding was observed.
The third ceremony will reveal who your family really belongs to.
Claire looked at Daniel.
"What third ceremony?"
No one answered.
Then Evelyn called.
Claire answered immediately.
"Mom?"
Her mother's voice was terrified.
"Claire, someone was inside my house."
"Are you okay?"
"Yes."
"What did they take?"
Evelyn was silent.
"Mom?"
"They didn't take anything."
Claire's heart pounded.
"Then what happened?"
"They left something on my bed."
"What?"
Evelyn began crying.
"A wedding dress."
Claire froze.
"What kind of wedding dress?"
"The same one Victoria was wearing when they took her to St. Orison."
Claire looked at the list of women's names.
Victoria.
Evelyn.
Anna.
Marianne.
Sophie.
Claire.
Suddenly it did not look like a list of victims.
It looked like a sequence.
A chain connecting generations of women who had discovered the same secret.
And Claire's name was last.
For now.
She closed Sophie's bronze locket.
The tiny metallic click echoed through the room.
Twenty years earlier, Claire had believed her mother's death was the great tragedy of her life.
Then she learned Evelyn was alive.
She believed finding her would end the nightmare.
It had only opened the door.
Because someone had been protecting a secret older than St. Orison.
Older than Marcus Reed.
Older than Richard's betrayal.
And whoever had taken Sophie wanted Claire to bring Evelyn back to the house where the entire story had begun.
Whitmore Hall.
Claire looked again at the photograph of Arthur Reed.
Then at the Red Ledger in his hand.
One thought became impossible to ignore.
Maybe the ledger did not record the people who had been imprisoned.
Maybe it recorded why certain children had been born.
Daniel touched her shoulder.
"We're not going."
Claire looked at him.
"They have my father."
"We send police."
"They'll know."
"We can't walk into a trap."
Claire touched the second locket.
"Sophie walked into it."
"You don't know that."
"No."
Claire looked toward the photograph.
"That's what scares me."
Her phone vibrated one final time.
This message did not come from the unknown number.
It came from Sophie's phone.
Only six words.
Claire, do not bring Evelyn here.
Then another message appeared.
He is not after our mother.
Claire stared.
Daniel leaned closer.
A third message began typing.
Three dots appeared.
Then vanished.
Appeared again.
Finally, one sentence arrived.
He is after you.
The phone went silent.
Outside the station windows, morning sunlight spread across Boston.
Traffic moved.
People walked to work.
Coffee shops opened.
The world continued as if nothing had changed.
Claire lifted her mother's locket in one hand.
Sophie's matching locket in the other.
Two daughters.
Two lockets.
One family history built on disappearances.
And somewhere inside Whitmore Hall, the grandfather everyone thought was dead was waiting for Claire to come home.
This time, she would not arrive as a frightened nine-year-old girl.
She would arrive knowing exactly what her family had done.
Or believing she did.
Because beneath Sophie's final message, another line suddenly appeared.
A photograph was uploading.
Claire watched it load slowly.
At first she saw only a hospital room.
Then a bed.
Then a woman holding two newborn babies.
Evelyn.
Claire leaned closer.
The date printed on the photograph was not 2007.
It was 1997.
The year Claire was born.
Claire stopped breathing.
Two babies.
Not one.
Daniel whispered, "Claire..."
Claire stared at the infant beside the baby she had always believed was herself.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written two names.
Claire.
And Caroline.
Claire looked toward Detective Ortiz.
"No."
The dates did not fit.
The family tree did not fit.
Nothing fit anymore.
Then the photograph disappeared from her phone.
Deleted remotely.
But Claire had already seen it.
And in that instant she understood why Arthur Reed wanted her at Whitmore Hall.
The secret was never simply that Evelyn had another daughter.
The secret was that Claire Whitmore might never have been the daughter they told her she was.
Her phone vibrated once.
A final message.
Tomorrow.
Noon.
Come learn which baby they kept.
May you like
Claire raised her eyes.
And somewhere far away, a church bell began to ring.
