Chapter 13 - What Anna Died Protecting)

Anna Hale had not died from illness.

The exhumation confirmed it.

A toxicology report found traces of a rare cardiac medication that had never been prescribed to her.

In a high enough dose, it could produce symptoms resembling sudden heart failure.

Murder.

Lily was asleep when Margaret received the news.

Margaret sat at the kitchen table and cried without sound.

Claire sat beside her.

"I'm sorry."

Margaret wiped her face.

"She knew."

Claire waited.

"Anna knew someone was going to come for her."

"Why didn't she go to the police?"

"She didn't know who to trust."

Margaret looked toward Lily's bedroom.

"She made me promise that if anything happened, I'd keep Lily close to Whitmore Hall."

Claire frowned.

"Why the mansion?"

"She said it was the safest dangerous place."

Claire almost understood.

If the conspiracy was watching Claire, then Lily staying close to her might make the child visible enough to protect.

Invisible people could disappear.

Visible people created questions.

"What did Anna find?"

Margaret stood.

She walked to a cabinet and removed a children's storybook.

"I forgot about this."

She opened the back cover.

A small memory card had been taped beneath the binding.

Claire stared.

"Anna left it?"

"The week before she died."

"Why didn't you give it to police?"

"She told me it was family photographs."

Claire inserted the card into a laptop.

There were no family photographs.

There were scanned medical files.

Dozens.

St. Orison patient records.

Most names were aliases.

Several included pregnancy notes.

Some ended with the words infant transferred.

Claire felt sick.

"Transferred where?"

Daniel scrolled.

"There are numbers."

"Patient IDs?"

"No. Child identifiers."

One record caught Evelyn's attention.

Elaine Ward.

Her alias.

Claire opened it.

The file contained medication records.

Psychiatric notes.

A surgical report.

This time the missing pages were present.

Claire began reading.

Then stopped.

Daniel saw her expression.

"What?"

Claire looked at Evelyn.

"I don't know how to say this."

Evelyn sat very still.

"Say it."

Claire swallowed.

"The surgery wasn't exploratory."

"What was it?"

Claire's voice shook.

"A delivery."

Silence.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Evelyn did not react at first.

Then she whispered.

"No."

Claire continued.

"You were pregnant."

"No."

"You gave birth."

"No."

The record showed a date.

November 3, 2007.

Female infant.

Healthy.

Transferred forty-eight hours later.

Mother sedated.

No consent signature.

Claire felt physically ill.

Evelyn stood abruptly and knocked over the chair.

"No."

Claire reached for her.

Evelyn backed away.

"I would remember."

"They drugged you."

"I would remember having a baby."

"Mom."

"I would remember."

Her voice broke.

Then she clutched her abdomen.

A memory.

Not full.

Not clear.

But something.

She began crying.

"I woke up hurting."

Claire froze.

Evelyn stared at nothing.

"There was blood."

Her breathing quickened.

"A nurse told me I had surgery."

Claire approached slowly.

Evelyn looked at her.

"They took my baby."

Claire wrapped both arms around her.

Evelyn collapsed against her.

Daniel turned away, wiping his eyes.

Margaret sank into a chair.

The mystery was no longer about stolen money.

It was about a child.

Claire's sister.

Somewhere.

Possibly alive.

They returned to the computer.

The infant identifier was NH-4421.

No name.

No adoption record.

But Anna had attached a second file.

A photograph.

A newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.

On the back of the image was a handwritten note.

Taken from Elaine Ward without consent.

Placed through North Haven network.

Claire whispered, "Anna found her."

Evelyn stared at the screen.

Another document listed the person who authorized transfer.

Michael Mercer.

Rachel's supposedly dead uncle.

Then came a payment record.

Recipient.

Arthur Reed Legal Trust.

Daniel stood.

"My grandfather sold her."

Claire shook her head.

"We don't know that."

"It says transfer fee."

"It could mean something else."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"What else could it mean?"

Claire closed the file.

"We find North Haven."

Federal agents moved before sunrise.

The Vermont clinic was searched under warrant.

Records had been partially destroyed.

But not everything.

Investigators found archived adoption ledgers stored under an older company name.

The infant identifier appeared once.

NH-4421.

Placement status.

Private guardianship.

Receiving family name had been blacked out.

But the city remained.

Boston.

Claire stared.

"She grew up near me."

Evelyn whispered, "My daughter was in Boston."

Another line appeared beneath the record.

Annual welfare verification required until age eighteen.

The final verification had occurred the previous year.

That meant the child had survived.

She was now nineteen.

Claire had a nineteen-year-old sister.

Somewhere.

And Michael Mercer had been checking on her for almost two decades.

Detective Ortiz entered the room holding another document.

"We found something else."

Claire looked up.

Ortiz placed a recent surveillance photograph on the table.

A young woman with dark hair walked across a college campus.

The date was three months earlier.

Evelyn touched the photograph.

"Who is she?"

Ortiz answered.

"We don't know."

Claire looked closer.

The young woman's profile resembled Evelyn.

And Claire.

Not enough to prove anything.

Enough to hurt.

On the back of the photograph was one handwritten instruction.

Do not contact until Claire is married.

Claire's blood went cold.

Daniel read it.

"Why the wedding?"

No one knew.

Then Claire remembered the timing.

Anna gave Lily the locket before her death.

Evelyn resurfaced.

Marcus returned to St. Orison.

The dormant Whitmore account sent money.

Everything accelerated before Claire's wedding.

Someone had been waiting for it.

Claire whispered, "The wedding wasn't just a wedding."

Evelyn looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

May you like

Claire stared at the photograph.

"It was a deadline."
