Chapter 8 - The Missing Three Seconds
The video lasted twelve seconds.
Margaret sat in the Marrow House library wearing a green cardigan Ella remembered. Afternoon light warmed one side of her face. Her voice was tired but unmistakable. There were no obvious glitches, no unnatural mouth movements, and none of the compression patterns Naomi had identified in the fake authorization video.
Arthur watched it twice.
"She never said this to me," he said.
Ella could not look away from the screen. "She knew Elias."
"Or someone built a better imitation."
Naomi extracted the file and began an analysis. The video had been uploaded from Ella's stolen phone, but its embedded creation date was six years old. The device identifier belonged to a camera once connected to Marrow House's original security network.
"The image is real," Naomi said after an hour. "At least, most of it is. There is an audio discontinuity after the word asks. The room tone ends before the video does."
She displayed the waveform. Margaret's sentence occupied nine seconds. The final three seconds showed her leaning toward the camera, lips beginning another word, but no sound followed. The file ended on a clean digital boundary.
"Someone cut the rest," Ella said.
"Yes. The question is how much."
Priya requested logs from the trust portal. Elias had used a recovery code created under Ella's account three months earlier. The code was generated at 3:14 a.m. while Ella and Elias were staying at Cynthia's Napa house.
Ella remembered waking that night to find Elias beside the window with her laptop.
"You were talking in your sleep," he had said. "I moved it before you kicked it off the bed."
Every old tenderness now contained a second scene.
Detective Park obtained an arrest warrant for Caleb Dunn after fingerprints from box 903 matched prints in the hotel room. He was detained at Oakland airport carrying forty thousand dollars in cash and a passport under another name.
During questioning, Caleb denied knowing Ella. He claimed Cynthia had hired him to notarize routine property documents for a daughter-in-law who suffered severe anxiety. When Park showed him the three forged future statements, he asked for an attorney.
That evening, Cynthia appeared on a local broadcast and accused Arthur of exploiting a family medical crisis. She denied ownership of North Coast, denied knowing Caleb, and described Brenda's confinement as a safe place arranged at Brenda's request.
"Ella has always been vulnerable to dramatic interpretations," Cynthia said. "We hope she comes home when she is ready."
Ella watched from the precinct conference room. "She talks as if home is wherever Elias is."
"That is why you need to return to Marrow House," Arthur said.

Park objected. The building had too many entrances and too many residents to secure. But Ella had remembered something about the library camera. Margaret disliked cloud storage. During the restoration, she installed a local archive in a locked cabinet beside the elevator machinery.
"If the original video exists," Ella said, "it may still be there."
