Chapter 10 - The Man in the Brass Elevator

Detective Park drew her weapon. Officers moved tenants away from the central hall while the elevator rose floor by floor, its old cables groaning through the darkness.
Ella knew the machinery better than anyone. Without power, the car should not move. Someone had engaged the manual counterweight from below.
"Basement access connects to the alley," she whispered.
Park sent two officers down the rear stairs.
The elevator stopped at the fourth floor. The gate opened halfway.
A phone lay on the empty floor. Ella's stolen phone.
Its screen displayed a live video call.
Elias appeared in darkness, his face lit from below. "Hello, wife."
Park signaled for silence and activated a recording device.
Ella stepped into view. "Where are you?"
"Close enough to know you found Margaret's archive."
"You used me from the beginning."
He looked tired, almost offended. "The beginning changed."
"Your report says otherwise."
For the first time, he lost control of his expression. "What report?"
"Beneficiary Access. Four years ago. You described which grief I would respond to."
The image shifted as he moved. Behind him, Ella saw brick and a vertical iron pipe. He might be in the service tunnel beneath the house.
"Cynthia hired me to assess you," he said. "I did not know she wanted the whole building."
"You accepted money to meet me."
"I accepted a consulting assignment. Then I fell in love with you. Both can be true."
Ella felt the old instinct to search his voice for sincerity. She let the instinct pass through her without obeying it.
"Was Brenda part of the assignment?"
"Brenda was a mistake I could not end."
"Your son is a mistake?"
His face tightened. "Do not use the baby."
"You used mine before I ever had one. You wrote three futures for me."
"Cynthia wrote those statements."
"You put the key in our wedding album."
He looked away.
Ella understood why he had returned the phone. It was not surrender. He needed to know what evidence they had. She changed direction.
"Miriam is alive," she said, though Margaret's video had not confirmed it.
Elias went completely still.
Behind Park, Priya wrote a single word on her pad: Good.
"You do not know anything about Miriam," Elias said.
"I know she sent you."
"Cynthia sent me."
"Cynthia follows instructions. She always has."
The insult struck its intended target. Elias glanced over his shoulder before answering. "You think there is some old woman directing this from a throne? Miriam died when I was twelve."
"Then why are you afraid to say her name?"
The video cut off.
At the same moment, an alarm sounded in the basement. Officers found a small fire in the archive room. It had been set remotely with an electrical timer. The removed primary storage unit was gone, but Ella's duplicate memory cards remained safe upstairs.

Elias had never been inside the building during the call. The phone in the elevator carried a prerecorded connection routed through several devices. Yet he had reacted in real time, which meant someone nearby was relaying what happened.
Park ordered a search of the surrounding blocks. They found a van with surveillance equipment parked two streets away. The driver had fled. Inside were photographs of Marrow House, Ella, Arthur, Brenda's hospital, and every tenant who had spoken publicly.
