Chapter 14 - What the Verdict Could Not Return
Elias was booked on charges including conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, assault, and attempted extortion. Cynthia faced additional charges connected to the hotel, Brenda's confinement, and the bank confrontation. Dr. Vale was arrested after attempting to destroy patient records. Caleb Dunn began negotiating cooperation.
Miriam Harrow entered protective medical custody. She offered the district attorney a complete account of the cooperative fraud in exchange for immunity in Margaret's death.
Ella wanted to refuse on behalf of the dead.
Park reminded her the choice did not belong to a victim's family alone.
"Her testimony can convict the living people who acted," Park said. "Justice is not clean because evidence comes from clean hands."
Three days later, DNA results arrived for Julian.
Elias was not his father.
Brenda requested that the identity of the biological father remain sealed. She signed a full cooperation agreement and relinquished any claim connected to Marrow House.
The result destroyed Elias's final public argument that he had acted to secure a home for his child. Yet when Ella visited the jail under a monitored legal arrangement, he smiled.
"You think the DNA frees you from me," he said through the glass.
"It frees Julian from you. I was already free."
"Then why come?"
Ella placed a photocopy of Margaret's complete video against the glass. "To tell you the house was never the prize."
His smile disappeared.
"What did you find?" he asked.
