Chapter 9 - The Account Repaid

The bank restored part of Harper’s money after confirming the fraudulent transfer.

The rest became the subject of a restitution order.

Chloe and Eleanor were required to repay every dollar used for the wedding. Several vendors returned portions of the payments after learning what had happened, but the remaining debt was substantial.

Eleanor sold her luxury car.

Chloe sold the designer gown, though it brought far less than she had paid. The tiara, imported centerpieces, custom shoes, and unused wedding decorations were also sold.

Harper felt no satisfaction watching their possessions disappear.

Her satisfaction came from something quieter.

The surgery account was restored.

The boys were safe.

And no one could access her finances again.

She changed banks, security information, and emergency contacts. She removed Eleanor from every document and created a legal trust for the boys that only Harper and an independent attorney could manage.

Vincent visited Harper once during her recovery.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I should have questioned where the money came from.”

“You believed your fiancée.”

“I believed what was convenient.”

Harper appreciated his honesty.

He had ended the engagement and moved to another city. Before leaving, he paid the outstanding hotel charge that had been signed in his name, but he refused to give Chloe additional money.

Chloe began working full-time.

At first, she acted as though the court orders were punishments designed by Harper. But months of counseling forced her to confront how often she had allowed others to carry her responsibilities.

During a supervised visit, she sat across from Harper in a family-services office.

“I thought you would always fix everything,” Chloe said.

“I did too,” Harper replied.

“I’m sorry.”

Harper studied her sister’s face.

The apology sounded sincere, but sincerity did not erase consequences.

“I hope you become the mother they need,” Harper said. “But I won’t risk their safety while you learn.”

Chloe nodded through tears.

For once, she did not ask Harper to rescue her from the result of her own choices.
