Chapter 7 - The Ceremony Without a Bride
The scan confirmed that Harper needed urgent treatment.
Doctors stabilized her and prepared her for surgery. The procedure happened that same evening, not on Monday as planned.
She remained conscious until she entered the operating area, surrounded by professionals who spoke calmly and explained every step without allowing Eleanor or Chloe to interfere.
Meanwhile, the wedding collapsed.
Vincent arrived at the hospital after guests began posting messages about the missing bride. He entered the waiting area still wearing his tuxedo.
Chloe rushed toward him.
“Harper caused a scene.”
Luis stood from his chair.
“Harper collapsed.”
Vincent looked from Chloe to Eleanor.
“What happened?”
No one answered.
Mason did.
“Mom took Aunt Harper’s surgery money for the wedding.”
Vincent’s face changed.
He asked Chloe whether it was true.
She began explaining that the vendors had already been paid, that Harper had savings, and that Eleanor believed the money could be replaced later.
Vincent stopped her.
“You stole from your sister?”
“I borrowed it.”
“Did she agree?”
Chloe remained silent.
Vincent removed the flower pinned to his jacket.
“My parents asked why the final hotel payment came from an account with Harper’s name on it. You told me she had given it as a gift.”
“She would have eventually.”
“That is not an answer.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Vincent, emotions are high. Harper will be fine.”
The doctor had not said that.
Vincent looked at Eleanor with open disgust.
“You tried to cancel emergency care so we could take photographs?”
“It was an important day.”
“For whom?”
Chloe reached for his arm, but he stepped away.
“I will not marry someone who can watch her sister collapse and worry first about a ballroom.”
He left the hospital.
Within an hour, the hotel announced that the ceremony had been canceled.
Many of the payments were nonrefundable. The expensive flowers, decorations, and prepared meals remained in an empty ballroom.
Eleanor blamed Harper.
Chloe blamed the hospital.
But for the first time, no one supported them.
Relatives had heard enough.
Several guests donated the untouched food to local shelters. Others helped return rented decorations. Vincent’s family refused to cover the remaining bills.
