Chapter 6 - The Truth in the Envelope

The nurse opened the medical packet first.

Inside were Harper’s diagnosis, surgical date, physician instructions, and emergency warnings.

“She was already warned this was an emergency,” the nurse said.

Chloe stared at Harper.

“You brought that to the wedding?”

“I brought it everywhere.”

The nurse then held up the bank envelope.

Chloe’s expression changed instantly.

Harper watched her sister’s confidence disappear.

“That money was taken from my surgery account,” Harper whispered.

The doctor stepped closer.

“Nobody is stopping her treatment.”

Hospital security appeared in the doorway after staff reported that family members were interfering with emergency care.

A moment later, Captain Reeves arrived with Luis.

Luis had received an alert after Harper failed to respond to repeated calls. When he learned she had been taken to the hospital, he contacted their captain and drove there immediately.

Captain Reeves looked at the children first.

“Are they safe?”

The nurse nodded.

Then he faced Harper.

“Did someone access your account without permission?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“This is a private family matter.”

Captain Reeves turned toward her.

“Financial fraud is not a private family matter.”

Chloe began crying.

“I didn’t know she was that sick.”

“You knew before today,” Harper said.

Chloe looked away.

“You called her dramatic after she told you,” Luis added.

He had heard Harper’s account of the phone conversation earlier that week.

Eleanor pointed at him.

“This does not concern you.”

“It concerns everyone who had to watch an injured officer nearly collapse because her own family took the money meant for her care.”

The three boys began crying harder.

Mason stepped forward.

“Is Aunt Harper going to die?”

Harper’s heart broke at the fear in his voice.

The doctor crouched so he was level with the child.

“We are going to take care of her.”

Mason looked at Chloe.

“Why did you take her hospital money?”

Chloe had no answer.

The doctor ordered staff to move Harper for imaging immediately.

As the gurney rolled toward the hall, Harper reached for Mason’s hand.

“I’m coming back.”

For the first time that day, she allowed herself to believe it.
