Chapter 8 - What the Boys Told the Court
Harper survived the surgery.
Recovery was slow, but her doctors expected her to heal fully. Captain Reeves placed her on medical leave, and Luis visited nearly every day.
The boys stayed with a licensed emergency caregiver for two nights until Harper’s aunt, Rebecca, arrived from another state.
Chloe tried to take them home.
The boys refused.
Mason told a hospital social worker that Chloe frequently left them with Harper for days without warning. Eli explained that Harper bought their food and school supplies. Noah asked whether he could live with Aunt Harper forever.
A review of school records, medical forms, and financial documents showed that Harper had functioned as their primary caregiver for almost two years.
Then the bank investigation found evidence that Eleanor had impersonated Harper to authorize the transfer.
Chloe had provided the receiving account and immediately used the money to pay wedding vendors.
Both women were questioned.
Eleanor insisted Harper would never have reported them if Luis and Captain Reeves had not interfered.
But Harper had reported the transfer before the wedding.
The evidence was clear.
Harper did not ask for revenge. She asked for protection.
With legal assistance provided through her department, she requested formal guardianship of the boys. Chloe protested at first, claiming Harper was trying to steal her children.
Then the family court reviewed messages in which Chloe repeatedly referred to Harper as “free childcare” and complained whenever Harper asked her to contribute to food or school costs.
The judge asked Chloe a simple question.
“When was the last time you attended a parent-teacher meeting?”
Chloe could not remember.
“When was the last time you scheduled a medical appointment for any of your children?”
Again, she could not answer.
Harper provided dates, doctors’ names, teachers’ names, and copies of every form.
Temporary guardianship was granted immediately.
Chloe received supervised visitation and was ordered to complete parenting classes, counseling, and a financial responsibility program before requesting expanded access.
Eleanor was prohibited from contacting Harper or the boys without court approval.

When the judge announced the decision, Mason reached for Harper’s hand.
This time, she was strong enough to hold it.
