Chapter 2 - The File Claire Hid

The flash drive was encrypted.
Liam learned that before sunrise.
Officer Mara Reyes sat across from him in a private hospital office while a digital evidence technician attempted to access the files on a secured computer.
Claire was unconscious again, sedated while the medical team monitored swelling in her brain.
Ethan was being held for questioning.
The bruises on Claire’s body, the recording discovered beneath the cabinet, and the note on the flash drive gave the police enough reason to keep him temporarily.
But Liam knew temporary was not enough.
Ethan had money.
He had powerful clients.
He owned a risk-management company that designed security systems for hospitals, banks, government contractors, and wealthy families.
He understood investigations.
He knew how evidence disappeared.
The technician looked up from the computer.
“There are three encrypted folders and one video file. The video isn’t locked.”
“Play it,” Mara said.
The screen turned black.
Claire appeared in the frame.
She was sitting inside her car in what looked like an underground parking garage. Her face was pale. Her eyes kept moving toward the mirrors.
“If you’re watching this,” she said, “something has happened to me.”
Liam felt his hands close into fists.
Claire continued.
“For the past eight months, I’ve been investigating financial transfers made through Ethan’s company. At first, I thought he was hiding money from me. Then I found payments connected to my father.”
Liam stared at the screen.
Claire held up a photograph.
It showed Thomas Carter standing outside a warehouse.
The date printed in the lower corner was less than three years old.
Liam stopped breathing.
Their father looked older, thinner, and frightened.
But it was him.
Claire’s voice trembled.
“Dad may be alive.”
The video distorted briefly.
“I found this image in a private security report commissioned by a company called Meridian Crown. Ethan has been sending them information for years. Hospital records. Addresses. Family histories.”
Mara paused the video.
“Meridian Crown,” she said. “I’ve heard that name.”
“From where?”
“A sealed fraud investigation. They buy distressed companies and private data. On paper, they’re an investment group. In reality, nobody seems to know who controls them.”
The technician resumed the recording.
Claire leaned closer to the camera.
“I confronted Ethan about Dad two weeks ago. He said the photograph was fake. But that night, he searched my laptop and changed every password on our home network.”
Her voice became quieter.
“There’s something else.”
She held up a second photograph.
This one showed a group of men entering the same warehouse.
One of them was Ethan.
Another was a man Liam recognized instantly.
Dr. Samuel Hargrove.
Hargrove had been the surgeon who signed Thomas Carter’s death certificate.
Liam stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.
“That’s impossible.”
Mara paused the video again.
“You know him?”
“He pronounced my father dead.”
The recording continued.
Claire lowered the photographs.
“I don’t know why Dad’s death was staged. I don’t know what Ethan has been doing. But I know he’s afraid of what I found.”
The video ended with Claire looking directly into the camera.
“Liam, don’t trust anyone who says they were there the night Dad died.”
The screen went black.
Silence filled the room.
Then the evidence technician frowned.
“The encrypted folders just changed.”
Mara moved closer.
“What do you mean?”
“They’re deleting themselves.”
The technician pulled the network cable from the computer.
It did not stop.
One folder vanished.
Then another.
Someone had placed a remote destruction sequence inside the drive.
“Copy the last folder,” Mara ordered.
“I’m trying.”
The progress bar crawled across the screen.
Twenty percent.
Thirty-eight.
Fifty-one.
The folder name flashed briefly.
PROJECT ORPHEUS.
The computer screen went black at seventy-three percent.
The technician swore.
“Did we get anything?” Liam asked.
“Fragments. Maybe enough to recover one or two files.”
Mara turned toward the office door.
“We need to move Claire.”
“She’s in intensive care.”
“This hospital uses Vale security systems.”
Liam understood immediately.
Ethan’s company had designed the cameras, access controls, and digital locks throughout the building.
A nurse entered before Mara could continue.
“Dr. Carter, your sister is awake.”
Liam reached Claire’s room less than a minute later.
She looked small beneath the white sheets.
A dark bruise spread across her cheek.
Liam sat beside her.
“Claire.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For not telling you.”
He held her hand carefully.
“Is Dad alive?”
Claire looked toward the camera in the corner of the room.
Then she whispered, “Turn it off.”
Liam stepped onto a chair and disconnected the camera himself.
Claire waited until the small red light disappeared.
“I don’t know where Dad is,” she said. “But I know what he did before he vanished.”
“What?”
“He found children who officially did not exist.”
The door opened behind Liam.

Dr. Samuel Hargrove walked into the room wearing a hospital identification badge.
Claire screamed.
