Chapter 10 - The Meaning of Activated

No one understood the word dormant until Hargrove found the behavioral protocols.
Each Orpheus child had been assigned psychological triggers.
Some were sounds.
Some were phrases.
Some were images linked to early memories.
The children had been conditioned to respond under specific circumstances.
Not as assassins or mindless machines, as Claire first feared.
The truth was quieter and perhaps more cruel.
They had been shaped to trust certain people, fear certain places, disclose information, or make predictable decisions when exposed to particular triggers.
Activated meant a subject had been unknowingly influenced for an operational purpose.
Claire’s marriage to Ethan had been an activation.
Her dreams about the red door had been reinforced during her stay at Hawthorne.
Her career choices had been guided through scholarships, recommendations, and carefully arranged opportunities.
Even her meeting with Ethan had been designed.
Liam’s file showed he had remained dormant because Thomas had interfered with his conditioning when he was an infant.
The date beside Liam’s name indicated Meridian planned to activate him the next morning.
“How?” Liam asked.
Hargrove searched the protocol.
“Through a phrase spoken by a trusted authority figure.”
“What phrase?”
“The line is missing.”
Mara ordered every member of the investigation to avoid speaking to Liam alone.
His phone was confiscated.
Television and radio access were removed from his room.
Thomas remained under guard.
Claire refused to leave Liam.
At six in the morning, a package arrived at the police command center.
It contained a child’s wooden puzzle.
Liam recognized it.
Thomas had given him the same puzzle when he was four.
The center piece was shaped like a small blue bird.
Claire reached toward it.
Thomas stopped her.
“Don’t touch anything.”
A bomb technician examined the puzzle.
There was no explosive.
No electronic component.
Only a tiny speaker hidden inside the blue bird.
When the technician accidentally pressed it, a woman’s voice played.
“Daniel, it is time to come home.”
Liam’s body reacted before his mind understood.
His pulse dropped.
The room seemed to recede.
A memory opened inside him.
White walls.
A woman kneeling in front of him.
A blue bird painted on a ceiling.
Claire grabbed his arm.
“Liam.”
He pulled away.
Not violently.
Mechanically.
His eyes turned toward the exit.
Thomas stepped into his path.
“Son.”
Liam looked at him without recognition.
The speaker repeated the phrase.
Daniel, it is time to come home.
Liam struck Thomas in the chest and ran.
Mara ordered the officers not to shoot.
Claire followed him through the command center.
Liam moved as though he knew exactly where he was going.
He entered the parking structure and climbed into an unlocked vehicle.
The keys were already inside.
Claire jumped into the passenger seat before he could close the door.
He drove.
“Liam, stop.”
He did not answer.
The city passed in a blur.
Claire called Mara from a hidden phone in her pocket.
She kept the line open but said nothing.
Liam drove north for forty minutes.
He stopped outside an abandoned children’s clinic.
A blue bird was painted above the entrance.
Liam walked inside.
Claire followed.
The clinic smelled of dust and mold.
At the end of the corridor stood a red door.
Liam opened it.
A woman sat inside.
She was in her sixties, dressed in white, with silver hair tied behind her head.
She smiled.
“Daniel.”
Liam stopped.
The woman looked at Claire.
“And Child 17.”
Claire stepped in front of her brother.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Dr. Miriam Cross.”
Liam’s eyes sharpened at the surname.
May you like
The woman stood.
“I am Daniel’s mother.”
