Chapter 11 - The Mother in the White Room

Dr. Miriam Cross claimed she had not seen Liam since he was six months old.

She also claimed Thomas Carter had taken him.

Thomas denied it when Mara arrived with police.

The confrontation took place in the abandoned clinic’s white room.

Miriam remained calm while officers searched the building.

“Thomas was assigned to transport Daniel to another facility,” she said. “Instead, he disappeared with him.”

Thomas stared at her.

“You surrendered him to Orpheus.”

“I was told he would receive treatment.”

“He was an infant.”

“He had a genetic disorder.”

Liam stood between them, his mind slowly clearing as the trigger’s effect weakened.

“What disorder?”

Miriam’s expression softened.

“You were born with a rare cardiac condition. Meridian funded an experimental procedure.”

Liam looked toward Hargrove.

“Is that possible?”

Hargrove nodded reluctantly.

“The scar near your sternum. You told me it came from childhood surgery.”

Liam touched the faint line.

“Thomas said I had pneumonia.”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

Miriam continued.

“The procedure saved you. But Meridian demanded ownership of the research and everyone involved. When I tried to take you home, they refused.”

“So you let them keep me?”

“I tried to expose them.”

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“You became their director.”

Mara looked at Miriam.

“You ran Orpheus?”

“I attempted to control it from within.”

Claire stepped closer.

“That is what everyone says after they become part of something evil.”

Miriam’s calm expression finally broke.

“You think Thomas rescued you? Ask him why you and Daniel were placed together.”

Claire turned toward Thomas.

He did not answer.

“Tell them,” Miriam said.

Thomas looked older than he had at the pier.

“Claire’s biological father helped create the Orpheus financial network.”

The room went silent.

“He wanted to leave Meridian,” Thomas continued. “He copied the index and tried to escape with his daughter.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

“What happened to him?”

“He was killed.”

“And my mother?”

“Also killed.”

Claire turned away.

Thomas took a step toward her.

“I was ordered to deliver you to another placement. Instead, I brought you home. I placed you with Daniel because keeping both of you together gave me leverage. Meridian could not move against one child without risking exposure through the other.”

“You used us as protection.”

“At first.”

Claire looked at him.

“At first?”

Thomas’s voice broke.

“Then you became my children.”

Miriam watched them.

“Thomas’s love may have become real. His plan was still built on a lie.”

Liam looked at Miriam.

“And yours?”

“My plan was to bring you back.”

“By activating me?”

“To protect you from Ethan.”

“You took control of my mind.”

“I used a conditioned response that already existed.”

“You created that response.”

Miriam did not deny it.

Mara stepped forward.

“You’re under arrest.”

Before officers could reach her, lights flashed behind the white walls.

A hidden panel opened.

Gas poured into the room.

Hargrove shouted for everyone to cover their mouths.

Miriam disappeared through the panel.

Police pursued her into a tunnel beneath the clinic.

By the time the gas cleared, she was gone.

But she left something behind.

A file marked DANIEL CROSS.

Inside were Liam’s original medical records, photographs from infancy, and a series of letters written by Miriam.

The final document was recent.

It authorized the transfer of all Meridian medical archives to Ethan Vale.

Miriam’s signature appeared at the bottom.

She had not summoned Liam to protect him from Ethan.

She had been working with him.

Or she wanted them to believe she had.

Among the papers, Claire found a photograph of Miriam standing beside Ethan at a private event.

The image had been taken fifteen years earlier.

Ethan looked almost exactly as he did now.

Liam examined the date.

“That’s impossible.”

Thomas took the photograph.

His hands began to shake.

“That is not Ethan.”

“Then who is it?” Claire asked.

May you like

Thomas looked at the man in the photograph.

“His father.”
