Chapter 1 - The Night She Was Supposed to Fall

Three hours earlier, Claire Vale had stood barefoot at the top of the staircase in her own home, holding a phone she had been pretending not to record with.

Below her, Ethan was speaking to someone in the darkened study.

The door was almost closed, but not completely.

Claire could see the edge of his white shirt through the narrow gap.

“You promised she wouldn’t find the account,” Ethan said.

A man answered through the speakerphone.

“She was never supposed to open the storage records.”

Claire held her breath.

Her hand tightened around the phone.

For six years, she had trained herself to move quietly around Ethan. She had learned which floorboards creaked, how long the security cameras took to rotate, and which version of his smile meant he was about to lie.

She had once called those habits marriage.

Now she understood they were survival.

“What did she see?” the man asked.

“Enough to become a problem.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

The study door moved.

She stepped backward.

The heel of her foot touched the top stair.

The phone slipped slightly in her damp palm.

Inside the study, Ethan stopped talking.

“Claire?”

She ran.

She did not make it farther than the second-floor hallway.

Ethan caught her by the wrist and slammed her against the wall. The phone fell onto the carpet, but the recording continued.

His face was inches from hers.

“What did you hear?”

“Nothing.”

The first strike came so quickly she did not even feel it until her cheek hit the wall.

Ethan grabbed her throat.

Claire clawed at his hand.

“You were warned,” he whispered.

She stared into the eyes of the man she had married.

There was no anger in them.

That frightened her more than rage would have.

He dragged her toward the stairs.

Claire twisted free for half a second.

It was enough time to kick the phone beneath the narrow cabinet at the top of the landing.

Ethan did not notice.

He grabbed her wrist again.

The bruises that Liam would later discover began forming beneath his fingers.

“You should have stayed out of my office,” he said.

Then he pushed her.

Claire remembered the chandelier above her.

She remembered the staircase turning sideways.

She remembered striking the wooden railing with her shoulder.

But she did not fall all the way down.

She caught the edge of a step and curled around the small flash drive taped beneath her blouse.

Ethan came down slowly.

He stood above her while she struggled to breathe.

“You slipped,” he said.

Claire tasted blood.

“You’ll tell them it was an accident.”

She did not answer.

He crouched beside her and checked her pulse.

Claire closed her eyes and forced her breathing to slow.

She heard Ethan walk away.

A minute later, he called emergency services.

“My wife fell down the stairs,” he said with perfect panic in his voice. “Please hurry.”

Claire remained still as he spoke.

When the paramedics arrived, she let her body go limp.

She knew Ethan would accompany her to the hospital.

She also knew the emergency department was where her brother worked.

If she could reach Liam alive, she might have one chance.

Inside the ambulance, a paramedic cut open part of her sleeve to examine her arm.

Claire opened her eyes for only a second.

“Please,” she whispered.

The paramedic leaned closer.

“There’s something under my shirt.”

The woman found the flash drive.

Claire closed her eyes again before Ethan climbed into the ambulance.

Now, in the emergency room, the drive rested in Liam’s hand.

Claire’s heart monitor screamed.

Her body convulsed.

Liam moved instantly.

“Get him out of here,” he ordered.

The officers seized Ethan’s arms.

Ethan did not resist.

He watched Liam treat Claire with an eerie calm.

Then he turned to Officer Mara Reyes.

“You have no idea who you’re protecting,” Ethan said.

Mara tightened the handcuffs.

“I know exactly who I’m arresting.”

Ethan smiled.

“No. You don’t.”

Claire’s heart rhythm stabilized after forty-seven terrifying seconds.

Liam stayed beside her until her breathing settled.

When he finally looked toward the doorway, Ethan was gone with the officers.

But the words Claire had spoken remained in his mind.

He knows about Dad.

May you like

Their father, Thomas Carter, had died eleven years earlier.

At least that was what Liam and Claire had always believed.
